What is 5G and why should I care?
5G is the latest generation of cellular technology. It provides faster streaming for movies, games, music and video, such as FaceTime and Zoom. With this technology, the speeds you get are as fast as Wifi, so there will be no need to use public wifi networks and worry about your security online.
Currently, most people are still using 4G LTE, which allows them to have fast internet, making social media and streaming services possible, although 5G is up to 10 times faster than LTE. The biggest concern with 5G is how battery hungry it can be and how much faster your iPhone may drain.
As of right now, 5G covers millions of people in the U.S., but for some people, 5G may not be worth the cost in battery life, spotty coverage and other additional costs. Only the newest iPhones (iPhone 12) supports 5G; all older models do not.
So is 5G worth it? That is different for each situation. A year from now, it will most definitely be worth it. Today, if you need high speed internet without wifi, are an early adopter of new technology even if you know it’s not fully functional yet, or want the latest and greatest iPhone to last the longest, then it may be for you. For people whose focus is stability, battery life and cost, you may want to hold off another 6 months to a year before upgrading.
