What are the 5 "Deeply Human" Skills every leader needs?

Last month, I attended the @Uplift by BetterUp conference to hear from experts and leaders in coaching and leadership about today's opportunities and challenges.

BetterUp was founded several years ago to "democratize coaching" and make it readily available and affordable to all workforce levels.?Having become an Executive and Leadership Coach decades ago when it was 'reserved' for those at the top, I've been thrilled to watch (and participate in) the evolution of leadership coaching as its value continues to cascade throughout organizations.??

Aptly entitled "Courageous Leadership," themes continued to surface throughout the sessions regarding how the challenges and uncertainty faced by today's leaders, managers, and organizations are "stronger than ever before."?

Perhaps driven by both the fear and promise of AI,?and?oh so?many more factors, leadership researcher and expert Brene Brown noted in her closing keynote that "leadership is?really, really?hard, and requires great self-awareness."??

One of my biggest takeaways from the conference came from BetterUp CEO Alexi Roblchaus, who shared what he called five "deeply human skills" needed today by all leaders, especially managers of managers. These individuals are the 'lifeblood' of an organization, the ones who drive a team's peak performance, and they need these skills more than ever in the face of today's chaotic and ambiguous business environments.

Identified through BetterUp's extensive data and research derived from its large base of global customers, these are the 5 DEEPLY HUMAN SKILLS necessary for today's leaders:

  1. COACHING, of course, versus a command and control approach
  2. SELF-COMPASSION to help regulate emotions and triggers
  3. PROBLEM-SOLVING for complex challenges?
  4. STRATEGIC PLANNING, which requires?strong?introspection
  5. AUTHENTICITY AND CONNECTION that can inspire participation (and requires a lot of self-awareness!)

I couldn't agree with these skills more!

In fact, I recently launched the Assess.?Act.?Achieve. Executive and Peer Group On-line Coaching Program, a 3-month blended learning approach to building these EXACT skills, for those managers of managers who are driving their team to peak performance.?

Throughout this self-paced, highly interactive program, participants:

  • Gain a deeper self-awareness of their leadership strengths, motivations, and "unproductive" or 'disruptive' behaviors.?
  • Better understand their 'stress triggers' and learn to regulate their emotions.?
  • Move from managing to leading through the art of using questions.?
  • Manage their capacity for getting things done and their commitments to action and accountability.
  • Learn to step into difficult conversations and give and receive critical feedback.
  • Build their authentic leadership style and enhance their abilities to connect and communicate with staff, colleagues, and stakeholders.
  • Gain ongoing support, wisdom, and trust from an experienced leadership coach and a core of trusted, like-minded peers.?
  • Experience the benefits, value, and extraordinary outcomes of Executive and Peer Coaching.

If you are a manager of managers looking to build these 5 'deeply human skills' to drive peak performance for your team and organization, or a C-suite leader who wants to provide your high-performers/potentials with a high-touch, accelerated approach to building them, send me a message so we can schedule a discovery call, and discuss what this program can do for you or someone in your organization.?

Thank you for sharing the 5 Skills. I found the concept of self-compassion particularly resonant. It's true that many of us tend to be overly critical of ourselves. Developing self-compassion can help us become more understanding and gentle towards our own shortcomings, promoting a healthier and more balanced perspective on our personal growth and challenges.
