What if 3D printing could build a bridge?

What if 3D printing could build a bridge?

MX3D is planning to 3D print a steel bridge... Really.

MX3D have developed robots that can “draw” steel structures in 3D.

They are planning to 'print a bridge over water in the centre of Amsterdam. Their video demonstrates innovation and adaptation by industry and highlights the disruptive nature of 3D printing.  Want to see their video

Now consider the implications for your communities. Think about how many ways this could disrupt your economy.

Are you familiar with the concept of Digital Disruption? This is the theme of the Australian Smart communities next seminar? Why, because the way disruption is occurring in the digital age is having a profound impact on our lives, our work, businesses and communities.

Next Wednesday the Australian Smart Communities will have two great presentations by leading Australian firms creating, harnessing and implementing digital disruption. Please consider joining us for the 2 hour online seminar.  I am sure it will change the way you view analytics and 3D printing...forever.

Printing a bridge is a very silly idea. Bridges, by their nature, lend themselves to being made up of long uniform cross-section components. These components can be efficiently cast, extruded or cut. If you do 3d print a bridge, as one component, how do you repair it? How do you allow for expansion joints? How do you allow for flexing under dead and live loads?

Hey Michael Whereat, Shara Evans It's pretty darn amazing 'The Matrix" like world we now live in. I heard about 4D printing last year as well, Science Fiction is now Science Real - the future got here yesterday, now to get Tech and coding into schools from K-12.

Michael, thanks for sharing this. I hadn't heard of MX3D. 3D printing is a game-changing technology, with applications and materials ranging from printing metallic items, printed circuit boards (just announced by a company called Voxel8 in Jan), houses, food, and living tissue to name a few. There's even what is being called 4D printing (a terrible name) which uses adaptive materials as inputs, that enable printed objects to change shape in response to external stimuli such as water or temperature.
