What will 2025 bring for nurses?

**The Nurse's Dilemma: Meeting the Growing Demand for Quality Care**

In today's rapidly evolving healthcare landscape, the demand for registered nurses has never been more pressing.

As I reflect on the state of our profession, I often find myself grappling with a profound concern: how will we ever have enough nurses to meet the increasing needs of our population? The reality is stark; our society is calling for more skilled professionals to deliver the high-quality care that is synonymous with nursing. Yet, simultaneously, we are witnessing a troubling exodus from the field, driven by factors such as retirement and the all-too-familiar phenomenon of caregiver burnout.

Despite universities striving to educate and produce nurses at an unprecedented pace, many experts agree that it is unlikely our profession will adequately fill the growing void. Over my 13 years in various nursing roles, I have witnessed firsthand the challenges we face. Eventually, I found my niche in case management for a waiver program serving physically disabled individuals and frail elderly patients. This role, while rewarding, leans towards care coordination rather than direct patient interaction. And therein lies my dilemma: how can I contribute more meaningfully to those in need?

As we usher in 2025, I am reminded of my New Year's resolution—a commitment to do more. In pursuit of this goal, I have enrolled as an independent nurse under Medicaid. This opportunity allows me to provide hands-on care during my off-hours and evenings, bridging the gap for those who require personal attention. It’s a small step, but one that holds great significance.

Nursing is not just a profession; it is a calling. As we navigate these challenging times, each nurse must consider how they can extend their impact within their communities. My journey is but one example of how we can collectively address the pressing shortage of nurses by stepping outside our traditional roles and seeking new avenues to serve.

In this pivotal moment for our profession, let us all embrace the challenge ahead. By dedicating ourselves to doing just a little more, we can enhance the lives of those who depend on us for care and support. Together, we can rise to meet the demand and ensure that our commitment to quality nursing endures for generations to come.
