What this achievement has done. And what you can do to help your siblings or loved ones to also earn a 1st class degree.
This feat landed him a straight doctorate in a top U.S. university with an all-expenses paid scholarship. Imagine!
In his words:
On a personal note, l can say that there are certain factors that worked out for me.
First, in my high school, Government Secondary School, Afikpo, l served as the college captain. And having heard about and studied the profiles of many college captains of my alma-mater, l was always challenged by their outstanding intellectual and career achievements. So, l had and still have this "burden of responsibility" to live up to the standards set by my predecessors if l must be found worthy to have deserved the crown of the college captain-ship when we all meet, someday [l will be officially welcomed to the Government Secondary School Old Boys Association (GSSAOBA) by next year as it takes a decade after high school to be adopted to the nation and international forum].
Again, despite the reason above, l knew, and people have always believed that l’m above average academically, but l never considered myself a first-class candidate as it is always taken to be preserved for the unusual genius.
But, l have always valued mentorship (up till now, l have a couple of mentors that l tap from). When l got to FUTO, l quickly identified with ex-students of my secondary and others who were focused. Though, majority of them weren't 1st class, but they shared their lessons and regrets. Especially, l always ran to my seniors in the department to know what was laying ahead of me each semester and for advice too. So, l was always pretty much pre-informed. Though l did get materials ahead of school resumption, but l didn't read FUTO-based materials on holidays. I read other books to establish a broad background before narrowing down to recommended FUTO materials. And l think, it helped.
However, in the first semester of my first year, l didn't make a 1st class GPA but l had the highest in my class. And because l had 4-point score, l told myself that 1st class was achievable and immediately changed focus from staying on 4-point to 1st class. More so, owing to my performance in the first year and in the culture of my department, l became the class/course rep. That leadership role saw me not just focusing on myself but taking others into the picture. So, l no longer learnt for myself but learnt to teach others. To do this, l not only studied harder but learnt time management skills that helped my life. Of course, l never wanted to be stripped of my leadership because of downward academic performance.
Additionally, l wasn't in for frivolous and trivial activities on campus. I only participated in majorly professional students’ activities, although, occasionally, l contributed to shaping the politics of my department and faculty where necessary.
In summary, l had (1). A burden of responsibility, (2). B elieved in mentorship, (3). S ought and re-organised information, (4). Defined and redefined my priorities knowing that God's grace was a given.
Thank you for taking me down the memory lane.
The Second 1st Class in Industrial Physics
"During my secondary school days, my love for Physics, Maths and Further Maths is something my teachers were so proud of and studying Physics was a bit easy for me because of the passion and the foundation I had.
Unizik was stressful but I understood the pattern and with the grace of God I was able to emerge as the ‘Best Graduating Student’ of my set and was awarded by the Vice Chancellor.
It wouldn't have been my effort alone, but God helped me.
Any specifics on your routines or discipline that you can pinpoint must have contributed too?
In terms of routines: I don't miss a lecture and I do lots of studying.
I can spend 7 hours at a stretch studying without getting tired.
The calculation and proof parts of my course contributed because they entailed formulas which make it easy for me.
One thing I do is to understand the lecturer and his/her pattern and I’m good to go.
I don't bug myself with irrelevant coursework.
I don't wait till exam timetable is out before reading.
Once the semester commences with lectures, my reading commences.
I make sure I don't miss quizzes and assignments because it tells me the direction of the lecturer.
I don't fail to use my past questions in studying because that is the main map.
Any coursework I don't understand, I seek help from older students of my department or older students from the course related."
The Third 1st Class I investigated
For the first-class story, I think it’s because I really liked economics and I learn fast especially if I listen and ask questions, which is what I did most of the time. Then personal study and asked for help from others when I needed to.
I wasn’t always to my books, I had extracurricular activities. I was in the choir in school and I held a position and responsibility which could be demanding sometimes. I also held a position (in fact, twice) in my departmental association. I was grateful to God that they didn’t affect my studies.
In general, I thank God.
