Listen to my interview on the South African radio station?#SAFM?about the most important questions facing plant science as published in New Phytologist (https://lnkd.in/du69tm36) by an international group of 22 plant scientists representing the globe.
Important points:
??#developingcountry?nations - such as those in?#Africa?-need scientific support with the management of pests and diseases of crops
??? There is an urgent need for studying the effect of?#climatechange?and overcoming the challenges faced, specifically in?#agriculture
??The need for?#solutions?in plant science are different in per geographical region and it depends on the specific priorities of the given nation
??There is a global shortage and urgent need for?#plantscientists?- specifically in developing nations. We need to build?#capacity?to better study and overcome the challenges of climate change
??There is a huge need for increasing plant productivity. This can be achieved by investing in new?#technologies. New tech though, relies on?#scientists?and we have to be sure that we build the needed capacity to ensure continued productivity gain
??Final thought:?#Funding?needs to be prioritised for plant science and related disciplines. Considering the absolute reliance of humans on plants, the funding given to this field should match its importance. Plant science research globally, and more importantly agricultural research in developing nations are severely underfunded (https://lnkd.in/ddVjKu_e)
