What is a 1% Personal Brand?

What is a 1% Personal Brand?

I get asked this question often, especially when speaking with industry leaders.

A personal brand is a reflection of your expertise and skillset - it's how the external world perceives you.

It's like a business card, but with more impact.

It's the slight second before your first handshake with someone even happens.

A 1% personal brand is the result of an inner alignment between a person's skillset and purpose.

It's the incredible combination between leadership and self-knowledge.

It's the signature of someone who has put in the work to know who they are, and acts in coordination with their inner purpose.

Someone who appears as an excellent expert in their field, before speaking one single world.

4 ways to build a 1% Personal Brand

  1. Understand your true worth

You might have an incredible amount of expertise in your field.

A long list of clients testimonials, business cases and recommendations from your peers.

But the truth is that unless you understand how to market yourself and your achievements, you will stay invisible.

I have worked with incredible leaders who did not see their expertise as a goldmine for many people within their circle.

The knowledge we often take for granted is worth millions to other people.

Understanding your inner worth is about aligning your skills and knowledge with your purpose.

Identify what you are extremely good at and affirm yourself as the expert in your field.

2. Define your purpose

A life without purpose is like a clock without needles.

Your purpose is the alignment between the things you enjoy doing and those you are extremely good at.

It's about the impact you want to have on the world, through your vision and learnings.

Defining your purpose will require you to look deep into yourself and understand what is the impact you want to have on those around you.

Once you have defined your purpose, it's only a way up from there.

3. Align your mindset with your goals

Your mindset is the biggest asset you will develop in a lifetime.

It's what will drive your life decisions, keep you going in times of hardship, allow you to be disciplined and resilient in the pursuit of your goals.

Several people make the mistake of building a personal brand that is in complete dissonance with their mindset.

You can't claim to be someone who's extremely disciplined but have very unhealthy eating habits and zero tendency to exercise.

You can't fake discipline.

That's what building a top 1% personal brand is about.

It's about crafting your mindset and habits and redefining your perception of yourself first.

4. Provide value consistently

Once you have understood your strengths, be prepared to provide value to the world - consistently.

An thought leader is someone who's able to drive connection with an audience through value sharing.

The first thing you'll need to sell in every interaction with others will be yourself.

People will either be captivated or unimpressed by their perception of you.

By becoming someone who shares valuable advice and is eager to help those who need your guidance, you'll establish yourself as an authority.

True leadership isn't expected, it's earned.

I particularly resonated with the point about not being able to fake discipline - your personal brand has to be an authentic reflection of who you are and the impact you want to have. Consistently sharing valuable advice and being eager to guide others is such an effective way to build thought leadership.
