Whakamana i Te Mauri Hiko

Today we released @TranspowerNZ’s latest Whakamana i Te Mauri Hiko monitoring report, highlighting Aotearoa New Zealand’s continued progress towards a highly electrified future ? ?

Here are some of the key trends we’ve identified over the last 12 months:?

  • The pipeline of generation capacity has reached 32 GW – three times the current installed capacity of New Zealand
  • Innovation in flexible demand and large-scale BESS, with increasing grid connection enquiries for large-scale solar paired with BESS?
  • The trend of battery and solar pairing extending to residential solar, with recent data showing around one in three household connection points installing a battery with a solar installation
  • The residential sector overtaking the industrial sector as the single largest electricity-using sector
  • Ability of data centres, alongside low-carbon aviation fuels and green hydrogen, to materially shift the future of energy demand
  • Investment in flexible resources and storage needed, as well as energy strategy and supporting policy frameworks

Very proud of the team that pulled this together. See the monitoring report here: PowerPoint Presentation

David, first time reading your posts--my partner works in insurance for NZ renewable energy projects so came across you while doing some research :) What struck me while reading this report is the acknowledgment of talent/workforce shortages will be a real Achilles' heel for NZ’s transition to a decarbonised economy. I don’t come from the energy sector myself but it’s interesting to see a similar theme here, the importance of the people element, which holds true across lots of different sectors and types of projects. Big, macro economic, political, social, or cultural shifts, usually hinge on more than just technology or policy—it’s also about people having both the skill and the will to mobilise and then drive that shift. Thanks to you and your team for putting this report together.
