THE WGA strike from the POV of a Texas-based WGA member.

THE WGA strike from the POV of a Texas-based WGA member.

Being a member of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) in Texas during a strike is an arduous journey filled with unique challenges. The Lone Star State is known for its strong anti-union sentiment, which creates a hostile environment for those advocating for fair working conditions. As a result, I often find myself feeling isolated, unable to fully participate in the strike alongside my fellow writers.

The absence of support compounds the difficulties. Texas lacks a robust infrastructure to aid striking workers, and the local community often fails to comprehend the importance of collective action. It can be disheartening to witness the limited understanding and empathy for the struggles faced by writers in the industry. The prevailing anti-union ideology further exacerbates this sense of isolation, as it permeates various aspects of Texan society.

However, despite these formidable obstacles, I strive to maintain a positive outlook. One source of solace is the online community, where I can connect with fellow writers who share similar experiences and challenges. Sharing stories, frustrations, and strategies provides a sense of camaraderie and support, even if it's virtual.

Moreover, staying informed about the strike and actively engaging with union activities helps me feel connected to the larger movement. Attending virtual meetings and participating in discussions allow me to contribute in my own way, despite being physically removed from the epicenter of the strike.

Although Texas may not offer an environment conducive to union solidarity, I refuse to let the prevailing ideology dampen my spirits. I remind myself that every small step counts towards a bigger change. By remaining optimistic and resilient, I can uphold the spirit of the strike and continue advocating for fair treatment and rights as a writer.
