We’ve learnt a great deal from our candidates this year.

It’s been a candidates’ market, and a tough year for recruiting. However, the talent is out there and fundraisers will move for the right opportunity.

What can we take into 2023?

Here’s a rundown of the recurring themes we get from our extensive network of fundraising professionals when it comes to recruitment.

Much of it is common sense and widely in practice.... but there may be a nugget of use for those recruiting in the future.

Move quickly candidates are soon snapped up

Setting closing dates way in the future… and resulting interviews weeks after give the opportunity for candidates to accept offers elsewhere

Don’t ask too much as part of the recruitment process

Will a CV and cover letter suffice?

It’s well publicised the backlash on lengthy application forms. Likewise, processes that demand excessive application demands will put people off. Candidates are more than happy to put effort into their applications, but within reason.

Is the interview process relevant to the role?

The need to evaluate skills, knowledge and experience is imperative, but it’s easy to go overboard on this. Make it relevant to the nature and seniority of the role. The 5 year strategy request for a Senior Officer is a cue for a candidate drop out.

Flexibility on hours and hybrid working

This is one of the biggies we’ve heard about this year with candidates’ expectations leaning towards homeworking. We’re finding resistance on roles demanding 3 days a week in the office, for example.

The roles that are really flying are offering flexibility on homeworking, core hours and condensed working.

Flexibility on expectations

This isn’t a new one, however we are approached by a number of charities every year who might be losing a member of their team and want a like for like replacement. Our first push back is… how much development has the outgoing fundraisers enjoyed?... Can this be applied again to someone who can learn the ropes – maybe even from outside the sector!

Salaries

Another biggie with candidates. Times are tough for everyone and fundraisers know their market value while retaining realistic expectations. Is the salary on offer competitive in relation to the job?

We know there are binds when it comes to salary ranges, and sometimes there’s little that can be done. A major pitfall is advertising a range when not able to offer at the top of the bracket.

If you’re looking for candidates to maximise your fundraising and help you achieve the incredibly important missions that you work towards then drop us a message or give us a call.

We’re always delighted to assist in any way we can and we genuinely do have brilliant candidates on our books.

All the very best for 2023!!!!
