We've got a love story for the ages this May!
Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust
Protecting wild places across Hertfordshire and Middlesex
What better news to start the month with than the?arrival of peregrine falcon eggs at St Albans Cathedral? We've known for some time that?a pair of peregrines have been residing at the cathedral?and we've since been crossing our fingers for some good news. Thanks to conservation efforts of The Wilder St Albans team and local ornithologist/licensed bird-ringer, Barry Trevis, a nesting tray was constructed and installed at the cathedral. Naturally, the male and female love birds saw this as an opportunity to get busy and lay their eggs. Now all we have to do is?wait and see how the story of these two love birds unfolds...
We recently undertook a big challenge. Thanks to The Big Give, all donations from the 22nd to the 29th of April were doubled until our target of £10,000 was reached. We hoped to raise this money?to care for and protect the local wildflower meadows?that bees, and so much of our wildlife, need to survive.?
With your help, we not only reached our target, we surpassed it!
Thanks to you, we raised?£10,388!!
On the 29th and 30th June, Ben Marston, co-owner of the Puddingstone Distillery (home of Campfire Gin) is going to embark on a?30 hour e-bike challenge?where he will visit 30 wild places to celebrate the wildlife of Hertfordshire and Middlesex on an ebike in just 30 hours!?We want to demonstrate the breadth of incredible wild places we have in Hertfordshire and Middlesex and how these places can easily be accessed by sustainable transport. You can show your support by?sponsoring the team here. We are grateful to Estarli and Puddingstone Distillery for supporting this challenge. If you'd like to join as a corporate sponsor, we have a number of opportunities available, please email?[email protected].
Closes: 14th July 2022 at 12:00 PM
Our friends at Estarli have kindly donated an e20 folding ebike worth £1,255. 6 lucky people will also win a bottle of Ultrasonic gin from Puddingstone Distillery. To be in with a chance of winning, simply click the link below.

Nature News
May is a busy month for gardeners so how about taking one job off the list, leaving the lawnmower alone and letting your lawn run wild? That’s what we are being asked to do by Plantlife, who strive for lasting positive change for wild flowers, plants and fungi, for their #NoMowMay campaign.
Elms for the future
Our 'Elms for the Future' project led by our Wilder St Albans Communities Officer and Panshanger Park People & Wildlife Officer,?Jo Whitaker is off to a good start. Cuttings of suckers have taken well and are almost ready for planting in their suitable locations.?
Water Vole Surveyors
We've completed all water vole survey training of this year and we're pleased to report we now have 35 new surveyors this season! Each of our surveyors will help keep an eye on water vole numbers.

Rafts for Terns
We've recently worked with Friends of Stocker's Lake and Affinity Water to launch two shiny new rafts, built to attract nesting terns and other birds. Within 30 minutes of the raft being launched, a tern was chasing away a black headed gull for control of the raft!
