We've Been Job Searching the Wrong Way

We've Been Job Searching the Wrong Way

—Here's How to Fix It.

If you’ve applied to 500+ roles, tweaked your resume a dozen times, and still aren’t landing interviews—you’re not alone. The PM job market is tougher than ever, and many of us are unknowingly making critical mistakes that sabotage our chances.

The biggest problem? Most of us are playing the wrong game.

We focus on applying more instead of applying smarter. We obsess over “the dream PM job” instead of building credibility. We define ourselves with generic titles like “Tech PM” when companies are looking for specialists—AI PMs, Platform PMs, and Payment PMs.

So, what’s the right approach?

To find out, I spoke with Ari Janover , Principal Product Manager at Asana and creator of one of the most comprehensive free courses to land a Product Manager job. Ari has helped thousands of aspiring PMs land jobs, and his insights completely reframed my strategy.

If you’ve been struggling with your job search, this article is for you.

Hi, I’m Snigdha! I’m on a journey to become 1% better Product Manager every day and share bite-sized insights to help you grow your PM skills–one step at a time.

Mistake #1: Thinking More Applications = More Interviews

Most of us assume job hunting is a numbers game. We blast out applications, hoping one sticks. But here’s the reality: PM hiring doesn’t work like that.

Hiring managers don’t want generalists. They want PMs who fit the exact problem space they’re solving for—and you need to make it obvious that you’re that person.

What to do instead:

  • Get hyper-specific about your niche. Are you a Platform PM, Data PM, or API PM? Your work history already gives you clues—lean into them.
  • Tailor your resume to highlight that niche. If you’ve built tools for developers, you’re a Developer Experience PM. If you’ve worked in payments infrastructure, you’re a Payments PM.
  • Stop chasing quantity—focus on strategic applications. A hyper-targeted 10 applications are more effective than 100 unfocused ones.

Ari’s Take: “The number one thing I tell PMs is to stop obsessing over ‘breaking in’ and start doing interesting things. You need to build credibility in a niche—whether through work, side projects, or content creation.”

Mistake #2: Not Understanding Your Own Candidate Market Fit

You’ve heard of Product-Market Fit, but what about Candidate-Market Fit?

Coined by Phyl Terry and popularized by Aakash Gupta, this concept is simple: Just like products have to fit the market, job seekers need to fit the hiring demand.

Too many of us make the mistake of choosing our desired job title instead of identifying where we actually have an unfair advantage.

What to do instead:

  • Identify your strengths and overlap them with hiring demand.
  • Find the role where you’re in the top 5% of candidates, not just the top 20%.
  • Double down on that niche and position yourself accordingly.

Here’s a personal example:

I spent months applying for Tech PM and Data PM roles—because they seemed like the right fit for my background. But after analyzing my work experience, I realized I had built platform tools at Amazon Music, improved developer workflows at Autodesk, and removed blockers at ServiceLink by building scalable products. My niche wasn’t Tech PM—it was Platform PM.

Once I repositioned myself, I saw immediate improvement in inbound responses.

Ari’s Take: ”People think passion should drive their job search, but in reality, it’s about leverage. Where do you have a unique edge that others don’t? That’s where you should focus—because that’s where you’ll stand out, get hired faster, and create the stepping stone to the role you truly want.”

Mistake #3: Relying Only on Applications Instead of Visibility

Hiring managers don’t just hire from applications. They hire from their network and from the people they see contributing to their field.

If you’re only applying and not putting yourself out there, you’re missing half the equation.

What to do instead:

  • Network intentionally. Connect with PMs at your target companies. Ask smart questions. Engage on LinkedIn.
  • Create content to showcase expertise. Write about what you know. Share insights on LinkedIn. Position yourself as a thought leader.
  • Join PM communities.

Ari’s Take: “Once you have expertise, visibility is everything. The more people see you as knowledgeable in a specific area, the more likely opportunities will come to you.”

Final Thoughts: Play the Right Game

The PM job search is brutal, but the biggest mistake is approaching it like a lottery.

If you want better results:

  • Find your niche. (Where do you have an unfair advantage?)
  • Position yourself for that niche. (Resume, LinkedIn, applications.)
  • Increase your visibility. (Networking + content creation.)

This isn’t just theory—it’s what’s working for top PMs today.

And if you need a structured, actionable job search strategy, Ari’s free course is a game-changer. I took it myself, and I highly recommend it.

Why This Course Works

Most job seekers focus on sending more applications—but Ari teaches you how to apply strategically.

For example: In Lesson 1, Ari introduces four types of PM job seekers, and I quickly realized I fell into The Expert category. That meant my strategy had to shift—instead of blindly applying, I needed to network and position myself as an authority in my space.

This shift in mindset made a huge difference. Instead of feeling lost, I had a clear roadmap for my job search.
