Wet goes to dry? Newton is laughing.
We in the water restoration trade have heard the phrase "wet goes to dry" like it is a natural law. It is not! What is most astonishing about this statement is that no one challenges the statement. Every student that has paid to attend an IICRC class has a smart phone. Ever try to look up the science and challenge the statement? If you do look up "wet goes to dry" you will find a the instructor either does not know what he is talking about or he is trying to sell you a dehumidifier.
Scientific laws have been put to the test time again and again without fail, which is why they are called "laws." The law of drying the IICRC presents can be disproven with a simple Google search. The science behind the "wet goes to dry" theory is no science at all, it is an advertising jingle. The theory goes like this: If dry air is created by a dehumidifier, the wet material in a flooded space will be attracted to the dry air and into the dehumidifier. Nonsense. The attraction of water molecules to each other, is far stronger than whatever feeble force is created by the dehumidifier. The dehumidifier does create waste heat and cause some evaporation of water but it is an inefficient and expensive way to create heat.
Sir Isaaac Newton would be amazed to find that three hundred years after he codified the laws of thermodynamics, so few people want to understand it.
