Western Eye Hospital Catch Up 2

So it has been another busy month with COVID-19.

And the Western Eye Hospital is as busy as ever- adapting to a new way of working. IT rules and Everyone is a new adopter!

Our junior trainees BST/ SHO grades and most of our nurses are still re-deployed in St Marys hospital with our senior trainees looking after casualty.

So in the last 1 month:

Undertaken just over 5,000 patient appointments mostly calls. Another approx. 1,000 patients seen in casualty.

In glaucoma 1400 appointments around 200 of those were face to face.

Glaucoma Surgery: 14 Micropulse diode laser (MDLT) and 4 trabs, 2 of the patients had bilateral high pressures- so underwent a mdlt in 1 eye and trabeculectomy in the other. Another 2 patients had bilateral MDLT lasers. Again bilateral surgery was quite rare before Covid, but we need to try balance risk of blindness from glaucoma with threat of contracting Covid by patient and staff from repeat appointments. And emergency referrals from elsewhere still coming.

Another fellow is off to their consultant post - our loss, their gain

We are going through our recovery phase plans, new clinics - quicker patient pathways, more and safer devices, social distancing, lots of triaging of all the patients, PPE, more IT no paper- more to come later....
