Welcome to West Virginia, USA.?

West Virginia (WV) PE board was formed in 1921 to oversee the licensing process for engineers in West Virginia.

WV PE board works to safeguard life, health, and property and promote public welfare.

Minimum requirements for initial licensure as a P.E:

  1. Graduate from a 4-year engineering-approved curriculum
  2. Passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam
  3. Passed the Professional Engineering (PE) Exam
  4. Have at least 4 years of progressive engineering work
  5. Be at least 18 years

That’s it. If you have those requirements, you should apply and fill out the application form.?

In addition to those requirements, they will obviously ask for references, conduct a background check, and verify that you are a good, moral human being.

Fun fact about PE engineers in WV

  • Most people do not realize it, but the seal of a PE engineer WV does not mention the discipline. So, if you are an electrical engineer, the seal does not write “electrical engineer.” It just writes “Professional Engineer.”
  • You must renew your PE license every 2 years
  • During PE renewal, you must show evidence that you took some training/courses. The training should be at least 30 hours within the previous 2 years. Those hours are called Professional Development Hours (PDHs)
  • You must be at least 18 years old. Yup, if you are a genius, you are going to have to wait
  • WV allows no FE nor PE waivers. Sorry, you must take both exams
  • If you are registered PE in another state, WV will allow you to transfer your PE license to WV. You still have to write an application and provide some documentation to do so.?

Don't understand the requirement for the exams. Are the engineering courses taught in the US not accredited and each state has to verify the "quality" or is this for overseas qualifications. Why do the engineering degree - just do the PE exam. There are States in the US that let you take the bar exam without a law degree. Are there states that would let you register as an engineer with an engineering degree by just passing the PE exam?
