West Point Military Academy Drops 'Duty, Honor, Country' from Mission Statement

West Point Military academy has dropped duty-honor-country from its mission statement. Why is our Commander in Chief among the missing.Where is the bugle boy from Company C. The Long Gray Line is in retreat. The Unknown Soldier and all the heroic patriots interred in Arlington National Cemetery are turning in their graves. It is a revolting development and maximally disheartening.

What is next? Will we replace “from the Halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli” with “from the halls of LeBron to the shores of Naugatuck”, and the Providence College motto, can it be altered from “Veritas” to Providence College values? ( ambiguous with no power to stir the soul.)

Shall we concur that biological men are women to surrender to Progressive ideology? Are we to relinquish our identities and independence to become John and Jane Doe amorphous creatures without distinction.

The ambiguity problem is an obstacle to the effective pursuit of the truth. It lets us be vague and gestural, to speak in metaphors and allusions. But when conveying ultimate verities, we need more precision than that. When our choice of language fractures our honored traditions and blurs noble missions, we have crossed an ineradicable line into “critical” vagueness. This can elide into unproductive disagreements rooted in misunderstanding about the meaning of terms.

A great civilization requires words to have transcendent meanings, to lift the spirits of its citizens. When did we lose sight of the fact that definitions and mottos are emblematic of intentionality: “to establish justice, provide for the common defense and ensure the common welfare” It is these beliefs that have had a stabilizing and inspirational effect upon us as a united people.Who among us will not accept the baton in the unrelenting battle for, “duty, honor country.” But for “values,” we only hear a collective sigh of boredom as we watch “young soldiers fade away,” and the legendary “band of brothers” recede into an unrecollected past. The glory of Rome was revealed in its motto, “ I am a citizen of Rome” (civus romanus sum). If that reverential boast had instead been“ Roman values “ we would be descendants of Carthage rather than rebels from a monarchial nation determined to establish a Republic and “form a more perfect union.”Next let’s target Churchill’s speeches to sap them of vitality.

No longer will we confront our aggressors by pledging to “ fight them on the land and in the air.” Rather, we will withdraw to a “safe space” to shadow box with them in the skies and on the land. The subordination of an invincible motto to a disengaged word is the jarring replacement of the concept of merit-based attainment with the pointless ubiquity of “ diversity, equity, and inclusion.”

In our long and hallowed history, we have never been in such peril.
