SPEAKER BIO: Dr. Stephen Batzer is a mechanical forensic engineer who consults with clients regarding patent infringement, firearms, and the forensic analysis of accidents and product failures. He has taught at five universities, served as a commissioned officer of the US Army, and has worked as a manufacturing engineer in the Michigan automotive industry. He has testified at over 50 trials and published over 70 peer reviewed engineering papers. Dr. Batzer is also a member the Society of Automotive Engineers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and is a fellow of the National Academy of Forensic Engineers. He is a Vice President of the Michigan Society of Professional engineers and encourages all engineers to be licensed. He earned his BS in mechanical engineering from Michigan Tech, an MS degree in manufacturing systems engineering from the GMI Engineering and Management Institute in Flint Michigan and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering , again from the Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Michigan. Dr. Batzer lives with his wife in a log cabin in the Pere Marquette forest near Fife Lake.

PRESENTATION DETAILS: Family and Friends are Welcome!

Case 1: CNC Lathe Window Failure

An analysis of an industrial lathe accident is presented. During operation, the rotating chuck lost its grip upon the cylindrical workpiece. The detached workpiece impacted the inside of the lathe cabinet, rebounded, struck the composite viewing window and penetrated it. The machinist had been observing the machining process through the window, and he was struck in the chest by the workpiece. More interesting details will be revealed at the meeting.

?

Case 2:? Crossbow Draw String Anchor Failure

The analysis of separate, but similar, crossbow failures is presented. Two cases of bowstring anchor failure from the aluminum cams were presented, serendipitously, to the same expert. When the bowstring anchor lug, which is located on the cam, failed, the looped end flew backwards under bowstring tension toward the archer and caused injury. Having the two nearly identical cases simultaneously allowed the pattern to be recognized. Through analysis and testing, the cause of the failure was established, leading to settlement of the legal claims.

?

Case 3: ?UTV Axle Failure Associated with Rollover

The analysis of the fracture mechanism of a rear axle shaft of an off road side by side utility vehicle (UTV) is presented. Two minors were recreating; they were riding the UTV within the fenced confines of the family farm. The belted driver was partially ejected during an overturn event, and fatally pinned underneath the vehicle’s tubular rollover protective structure. The investigation answered the question regarding, “Did the overturn caused the axle fracture, or, did the axle fracture cause a braking action and initiate the overturn?”

UPCOMING PROGRAM: 3 spots left. Contact Debbie ASAP 616-475-0059 or [email protected]

Holistic Failure Analysis Seminar 11-14NOV24. Half day optional SEM demo 15NOV24.

To be held at the Training Center at Augusta Tower Technologies, just south of Lacks on the opposite side of Kraft. A few spots are left. See https://holistic-failure-analysis.com or contact Debbie Aliya at [email protected] or 616-475-0059. This is a career building opportunity for anyone who is directly or indirectly involved in Failure Analysis. Specific critical thinking tools will be presented for each step of the program. How to decide what tests to do, how to negotiate reference specimens, how to communicate concepts about why things get damaged, and how to distinguish between damage and failure. And MUCH MUCH MORE! Don’t miss this chance. Member price: $2000.00 by check.
