MLK Breakfast
City of Buckeye Economic Development Business Manager Brian Wright and the Citadel of Praise Christian Church put on the second annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Breakfast this month. Hosted at Summit Church in Buckeye, this breakfast raised funds to sponsor African-American students attending West-MEC.
Last year the breakfast raised enough funds to sponsor 46 African-American students attending West-MEC.
"It feels nice to know the community is invested in my education," said West-MEC Water Systems student Lyric Ford. "It encourages me to keep working hard and to pursue my goals."
West-MEC is thankful for Wright's continuous support; collaborations with the community like this are what keep West-MEC growing and improving every day.
National Mentoring Month
January is National Mentoring Month. At West-MEC, anyone can be a mentor. The instructors and counselors often act as mentors for our students and take them under their wing.
At West-MEC, it is vital that our instructors help students develop leadership, communication, problem-solving, teamwork, and other essential professional skills. This helps prepare our students both technically and professionally. West-MEC counselors help students stay on track and create a plan to achieve their goals. Mentors indeed.
But sometimes West-MEC students can be mentors as well.
Recently some of West-MEC's coding students helped out at Littleton Stem Coding Academy’s Hour of Code event, providing one-on-one help to elementary school students of various ages. One of West-MEC's student volunteers even attended Littleton for elementary school and was excited to return and give back through his mentoring.
West-MEC is always proud to see its students helping out in the community!
White House Panel
West-MEC Superintendent Dr. Scott Spurgeon spoke with other Arizona industry and educational stakeholders as part of the Convening: Invest in America Talent Hub - Academia Panel this month. Students from our Energy & Engineering program were also able to speak quickly about their West-MEC experience.
At the press conference, a new partnership between Phoenix Union School District and West-MEC was announced.
West-MEC and Dr. Spurgeon were honored to be a part of this prestigious effort and panel.
