West Bengal Govt Hikes Doctors' Salaries and Strengthens Hospital Security

The West Bengal government has announced significant salary hikes for doctors and health staff, along with new measures to enhance hospital security. This move, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, comes amid ongoing efforts to improve healthcare services in the state and ensure a safer working environment for all medical professionals.

  • Salary Hikes for Medical Staff: At a recent meeting held at Dhanadhanya Auditorium, the Chief Minister revealed that interns, house staff, and postgraduate trainees will receive an increased stipend of Rs 10,000 each. Senior resident doctors now see a boost of Rs 15,000 in their salaries. Diploma-holding senior resident doctors will earn Rs 80,000 instead of Rs 65,000, while postgraduate senior residents will receive Rs 85,000 instead of Rs 70,000. Additionally, postdoctorate senior doctors’ salaries have been raised from Rs 75,000 to Rs 1 lakh.
  • Tribute and Security Measures: In a heartfelt address at the 'Chikitsar Arek Naam Seva' Program, CM Mamata Banerjee paid tribute to the victim of the tragic rape and murder at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, 2024. She urged male doctors to protect their female counterparts as a sign of solidarity and respect in the workplace.
  • Enhanced Hospital Security: The Chief Minister emphasized the need for improved security systems in hospitals. Measures include the appointment of ex-servicemen for hospital security, increased police surveillance, mobile patrol vans, and the installation of watch towers to monitor streets. Special attention will be given to addressing cyber crimes through proper training for police personnel.
  • Expansion of Public Healthcare: CM Banerjee also highlighted the state’s ongoing efforts to upgrade public healthcare infrastructure. Initiatives like Swasthya Sathi have contributed to a significant increase in government hospital beds and the number of doctors and nurses. The focus remains on ensuring that patients receive free treatment in government hospitals and that referrals between hospitals are managed effectively.

Why This Matters

These developments are a major step forward in supporting the hardworking doctors and health staff of West Bengal. The salary hike not only acknowledges the crucial role of medical professionals but also aims to boost morale and ensure that healthcare workers are adequately compensated for their dedication. Additionally, the reinforced security measures and improved infrastructure signal a commitment to creating a safer and more efficient working environment in public hospitals.
