INDUSTRY INSIGHTS
We reached out to our members, asking them to share the advice they wished they had received as young women engineers.
We are thrilled by the overwhelming response from industry professionals who generously shared their wisdom. Below, you’ll find some of their insightful entries.
Due to the popularity of this initiative, we have decided to include these valuable contributions in all future editions of our career newsletter. We hope their words inspire and empower other female engineers.
Laura Grant - Projects Director
Currently working as Projects director in the?Major Projects division at KONE plc, I have been with the company for 16 years but started my career as a contract administrator. I Sought out opportunities to learn and develop within the company, which led me to undertake a role as a site-based project manager, within this role I was then responsible for the undertaking of a multi-million-pound project installing lifts and turnstiles. With limited lift installation knowledge, it was a leap into the unknown and one that at the time I questioned whether I had made the right choice in leaving behind 10 years of commercial training and roles to do something completely different. ?However, the enjoyment I then found in delivering a project and being able to physically see the results of all the planning in front of me outweighed the seeds of doubt. If I can offer any career advice it would be to take up the challenge even if you are unsure, you learn far more about yourself and what you can achieve by stepping out from your comfort zone. There will be times that you question the change, but those times can only make you stronger and more determined to succeed. Don’t wait for opportunities to come your way you need to step up and put yourself forward sometimes it won’t always be successful but take the feedback and?use it to develop and try again.
