We're Starting Up Wrong

TLDR: While the past few decades have seen a proliferation of new business models for products and services, the core business model of the 21st businesses we create is so…standard. I’m talking of course about the business of the business: its corporate form, and how founders and shareholders earn money based on their investment of time and sweat. There must be better ways to develop an idea into a breakthrough product or service than the freestanding LLCs and C-Corp structures we have today. Before we can explore one of those better ways, let’s first align our understanding of how startups are currently organized.

This is a common model in the nonprofit world, in which an umbrella organization provides "fiscal sponsorship" to new projects and initiatives, providing the operational infrastructure they need without having to register and build a brand new nonprofit organization from scratch. The Public Health Institute in the US, which I've worked with via some of their projects, is a great example of this (https://www.phi.org/work-with-us/). Perhaps it's a more natural tendency for organizations with shared social goals to work together in this way than for profit-focused companies that often see each other primarily as competitors.
