Why Is Tax Resolution White-Hot NOW?

This specialized niche area of tax representation is in high demand, commands premium prices, and fosters customer loyalty unlike any other. Per IRS regulations, only those specially qualified as a CPA, EA, or attorney are eligible to represent taxpayers before the IRS and take advantage of this market opportunity. Only a very small percentage of practitioners who are eligible to represent taxpayers actually do work in this niche.

The IRS has finally turned back to enforcement after a two-year hiatus, with an estimated 50 million taxpayers either in difficulty with back tax liabilities or recognized as non-filers!

According to the 2021 IRS SOI Data Book, 50 million people owe the IRS one trillion dollars!

The IRS collected $60 billion through enforcement in 2021, a huge 54% increase over the previous year!

11 million taxpayers are currently in “collections” with thousands being added daily due to the impending recession and the continued fallout from COVID-19.

Every year, 10 million people do not file legally required income tax returns.

The Biden Administration is seeking $80 BILLION toward IRS enforcement activities spread over the next 10 years.

Passport revocations and non-renewals have been reinstated.

The IRS is aggressively pursuing “Worker Classification” Audits (W-2 vs. independent contractor status).

The IRS received a $12.6 billion budget in FY 2022 – the largest increase (10%) in nearly a decade!

The Administration is seeking another $1.5 billion ($14.1) budget increase in FY 2023—all toward enforcement!

The last time the stars aligned like this was 11 years ago, in 2009-2012.

The opportunity to incorporate tax resolution into a practice has never been better than now.

So you can understand why TheCPATaxProblemSolver began specializing in this niche nearly eight years ago.

I saw that helping folks solve their tax problems and practicing tax resolution would be one of the ways to achieve real financial independence in the tax space, building on the skills and credentials that I already had.

And guess what? I'm not the only one doing this work; many CPAs, EAs, and attorneys are.

Hold on to your horses for a minute! Let's slow down and think about things for a minute, and don’t get ahead of ourselves.

Michael Rozbruch has taught me a ton, and I have to give him credit for getting me started helping folks solve their tax problems. However, he is in the business of selling tax resolution marketing training, tax resolution sales training, and tax resolution practice management information.

His livelihood depends on bringing "new blood" into the industry. The recent 5-Day Challenge that he held and I referenced above had over 3,000 participants.

During the challenge, I gave a “shout out” to Michael and his wife Roslyn for getting me started in the tax resolution industry.

I purchased his tool kit a few years ago and can tell you that I still use it today.

His ideas on marketing are world ?? class.

In fact, he tells everyone in the very first chapter of the kit that the sooner you realize that you are not in the tax and accounting business but are in the marketing business, the sooner you will have the life and business that you dreamed of.

The hardest part of the business is not the IRS casework or dealing with revenue officers.

The most difficult part of the industry is making your telephone ring on a consistent basis which involves marketing, sales, and getting qualified clients. Most "accountant types" do not excel in these areas.

Rozz tells you that tax resolution is not a “get rich quick niche,” and I concur with him.

You must work your butt off on all of the marketing aspects and learn the casework.

I want to take a minute to send kudos to Rozz for showing once again how to get a tax resolution business off the ground.

I sensed the excitement in the group and a whole lot of "want to".

The tale of the tape, or where the rubber meets the road, is told after the 5-day challenge is over and there is nobody to cheer you on.

That's when the real work begins and the wheat gets separated from the chaff.

Like Rozz said during the challenge, he can give you the tools to succeed, but what he can not give is the "want to" that you must have in the tax resolution industry.

Practitioners starting in this industry are entering a marathon where they must pace themselves and set realistic goals. If they fail to do these important things, the "new blood" is setting themselves up for failure. I can guarantee you that they will be out of the industry just as quickly as they came into it.

Tax resolution is the easiest casework that I ever learned and have performed. Sales is hard and absolutely essential to being successful.

Yes, there will be quick wins. But the sooner you realize that you are no longer an accountant or tax preparer but rather a salesperson, the quicker you will be able to live the life you have always dreamed of living.

Many will carry on and go forth to do great things. As they do, they should remember the story of the tortoise and the hair.

Coaching programs are plentiful in this day and time. They are also much more accessible with the advent of virtual learning.

I would encourage those entering the tax resolution field to join the ASTPS or Tax Rep Network.

There are also Facebook groups where you can get support. These groups vary in purpose, as some are designed to help tax professionals navigate around and through the IRS, while others are a place to share questions, comments, and tips about software used in the industry.

There is even a closed group limited to those covered by Circular 230, which includes Enrolled Agents (EAs), Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) and Attorneys form to to support each other.

The thing to remember is that, as in most endeavors, there is more than meets the eye and the devil is surely in the details.

I am available to answer any questions and can be reached by phone at 850-533-3052 or via email at [email protected].
