We’re in the Ridiculous Phase of AI

?? Imagine this scene: a large stadium filled with screaming fans. Loud, pumping music and bright flashing lights warm up the crowd of tens of thousands.?

???♀? Is this a Taylor Swift concert? No, it’s the NVIDIA GTC 2024 event earlier this week. And the super star headlining the show? None other than the AI poster boy of the moment Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang .

We’re now in the way-past-rational phase of AI and into the land of super stars, super hyped technology and companies, and a super gold rush mentality by users, investors, companies, and customers.?

And we know what happens next, because it’s happened every single time before with AI. The sugar crash that comes after the sugar rush.?

AI… Err, we mean Generative AI is Here.

Companies are slapping AI capabilities onto their products like there’s no tomorrow. But actually, that’s not exactly what’s happening. It’s not that companies are finally adopting and implementing all Seven Patterns of AI in their products. Rather, we’re now in the phase of AI where all AI is Generative AI.

We recently got on a call with a company that asked us which pattern of AI was Generative AI. For those of you in the know, the Patterns of AI talk about how AI is being applied, not the technology we use to apply it. So the proper response to that question is, “well, what are you doing with your Generative AI?” When we asked that question we just got a blank stare. This means that people are not thinking about what they are doing with the technology, but rather just doing it for doing its sake.

?? That’s no way to run and manage an AI project successfully. But here we are.

The answer to the question on what pattern of AI Generative AI solutions fall under, of course, depends on the application. Are you using Generative AI in a chatbot or to generate text outputs meant for human consumption? That’s the Conversational Pattern. Are you using Generative AI to spot patterns in text and provide some analysis of text or images? That’s the Pattern & Anomalies pattern. Are you using Generative AI to steer your autonomous vehicle? Well, you shouldn’t be doing that at all. That's the wrong solution to the problem, so just stop that right now.

What Happens when the Silly Cycle Ends?

The silly cycle that we’re riding on with AI, this ridiculous phase, will end. As it must. The overpromising and underdelivering of AI is exactly what has caused the previous two AI Winters , and if left unchecked, will lead to another.?

AI is just a tool that we can use to improve and augment all our capabilities across the Seven Patterns of AI. Generative AI is only one particular implementation of AI capabilities that apply to a limited set of applications. Realizing the best way to apply the right technology to the right problem at the right time with the right scope and iterating to success is the best way to be successful with AI. This is the key behind the CPMAI methodology .

We don’t need stadiums full of flashing lights and CEO-lebrities hyping the audience to be successful with AI. Chasing the glamor and glitz will most likely lead to failure as we’ve seen a few times before.?
