There were only 313 of them

On 13th of Mar 624 CE, 1400 yrs ago, 313 men gathered at 23°44′N 38°46′E - plains of Badr, to fight for their rights and changed the course of world history, probably forever. The odds were stacked against them. They were facing an adversary which had 3x more men (~900 of 'em) and 10x more resources in terms of armour, weaponry and cavalry. The location they were meeting for this fight had a strategic disadvantage as the enemy had the option to retreat, if necessary, while they were cornered and had no passage to flee. Despite all this, these men achieved a decisive victory which is often attributed to factors such as superior leadership, courage, determination and divine assistance. This has since gone down in history and is called as the 'battle of Badr'.

The stories of David vs Goliath (Ar: Dawood vs Jaluth), Pandavas vs Kauravas etc, all have certain similarities of similar smaller forces overcoming larger adversaries but this one happened nearer to our times when history started keeping records of itself and hence this battle cannot be wished away as a 'fable' or 'folklore'.

The battle also had certain specifics. Specifics that exhort us to adopt a positive mindset, embrace challenges as opportunities for growth, and strive for success with determination and resilience. I'll list five of them here.

  • Courage and Resilience: The battle of Badr did not take place in a vacuum. There was 10 yr history behind it that involved hardships, adversities and even extreme torture faced by many amongst these men but despite all of it, they cultivated resilience to persevere through challenges and faced their fears with confidence. Underlines the aspect about teams that perseveres without losing hope, eventually wins.
  • Unity and Collaboration: The victory at Badr was achieved through teamwork and collaboration among individuals from very diverse and humble backgrounds who came together as a unified force for a common goal. Strong teams foster a culture of collaboration within their organizations, leveraging the collective skills and expertise of all team members. This drives innovation and success when guided by sincere leadership, that leads from the front.
  • Resources Management: Despite limited resources, these men at Badr maximized their capabilities by utilizing their scarce resources wisely. We learn from them to make the most of our available resources, whether it is our working capital, human resources, or technology, and allocate them strategically to achieve the business objectives.
  • Risk Management: The Battle of Badr was a high-stakes endeavour and carried significant risks of complete annihilation, yet these men managed to navigate these risks effectively. Taking risks is critical to sucesss but learning to assess and manage risks in those times allows us to take calculated risks. Careful planning and contingency measures minimizes potential downsides.
  • Faith and Trust in God: During the time of Jesus(ra), some people came to seek his guidance on a matter they were unable to accomplish and he admonished them by saying, "Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” (Matthew 17:20). To truly trust in a higher power, is no mean feat (a code that I am trying to hack for the past couple of years ;) but these 313 had unwavering faith and trust in God and that played a significant role in their victory at Badr.
