A new external evaluation?shares insights on how funders can more effectively support community leaders to help them achieve their goals in gender equity policy and social norms change. One takeaway: Local leaders call for greater focus, acknowledgement and funding for?community-based advocates—recognizing them?as the strategists and experienced professionals that they are,?not as grantees whose capacity needs to be built. Food as Medicine Program Showed Patients Better Managing Diabetes, Eating Healthier

A study by PHI's Center for Wellness and Nutrition (CWN)?found that people who participated in the Healthy Food Rx program—an initiative led by Abbott and designed by PHI’s CWN to provide home-delivered healthy food boxes to help address diabetes—were able to lower A1C levels, better self-manage diabetes, and improve overall diet and food security at 12 months.?“Giving people the tools and resources to try new foods and make new recipes will be sustained beyond the program and lead to better outcomes for people with diabetes long term,” said PHI's Maggie Wilkin, CWN director of research and evaluation.?See news coverage in the San Francisco Chronicle, STAT News and more and read the press release?→

PHI to Develop Five-Year Plan to Strengthen Emergency Response Efforts in California, Nevada, Arizona, Hawaii &?Pacific Islands

PHI has been selected by the CDC to strengthen the United States’ emergency preparedness and response plans in Region 9 states and territories, which include?Arizona, California, Hawai’i, Nevada, more than 157 federally recognized tribes, and US Affiliated Pacific Islands.?The?$1.29 million investment funds a five-year work plan to prepare for the establishment of a regional emergency preparedness and response center informed by community needs. It will emphasize health equity and including community voices that have historically been excluded from crucial emergency planning conversations, such as communities with a high proportion of people with limited English proficiency. PHI is?recruiting members of a Regional Coordinating Body in the next month who work in the region and are affiliated with state, tribal, local, and territorial health departments, K-12 public education systems, academic institutions, healthcare facilities and coalitions, and the private sector.   • Cannabis Policy in California: 2023 Scorecards: PHI’s Getting it Right from the Start annually reviews the evolution of cannabis policies in the 298 California cities and counties that have opted to permit retail sales, whether through storefronts and/or by delivery. The scorecards and interactive map are designed to educate policymakers and communities about what works and help promote more protective rules. One highlight: While 175 of jurisdictions enacted local cannabis taxes (a 9% increase from 2019),?only 21 spent these revenues on substance abuse prevention, youth programs, or mitigating the impact of the war on drugs.   • Cracking Down on Illegal Ozone Generators: An undercover investigation led by PHI’s Regional Asthma Management and Prevention program found that dangerous and illegal ozone generators are being sold to consumers in California. “Ozone generators are marketed as if they are air cleaners even though they are the opposite. People don’t realize they are essentially creating toxic smog inside homes or buildings,” shared PHI’s Anne Kelsey Lamb. See the press release?→
  • PHI in the News: Reimbursement of Virtual Healthcare: While all states offer reimbursement for live video-based telehealth services, certain limitations exist. PHI’s Center for Connected Health Policy recently released their Fall 2023 Telehealth Policy Update, which found?that 25 of all US states reimburse for 4 key types of virtual healthcare: video, store-and-forward, audio-only telehealth, and remote patient monitoring through Medicaid. Meanwhile, epidemiologists are lowering what they think the safe level of alcohol is. In the Wall Street Journal, Dr. Priscilla Martinez with PHI’s Alcohol Research Group explains the challenges with understanding serving sizes of alcohol: “You get a couple 20-ounce craft beer cans and think, 'I had two drinks.'
