If there were no dreams

Have you ever had the opportunity to ask a teenager about his or her goals in life? The answers will vary from “make it through the day,” to “learn to drive,” to “be the leader of my country.” Believe it or not, some teens are not going to even have an answer, at least not one that comes from their heart. At this point in their lives the future may be based on what expectations their parents, teachers, or even their peers predict they will be “when they grow up.”
The above happens so frequently, that living other people’s dreams is high on that list of regrets older people have. And you may have carried that habit into adulthood.
So, regardless of your age, give yourself permission to dream.
It’s your life. And before you know it, you risk being a statistic in the article on regrets. Or you will relate to the imagery in a poem written about what happens when dreams are deferred. Do they “dry up like a raisin in the sun? Sag like a heavy load? Or explode?” (Langston Hughes)
Or, worse yet, you will learn to dream small. Not believing yourself worthy of immense, life-changing dreams. Thinking everything is “fine” instead of striving for “exceptional.”
Dreaming when you are awake is highly beneficial. It ignites your goals.
Today’s action: No matter what your age, spend the day dreaming. Not just about the things you want, but about what you want your life to stand for.
And tomorrow, and all the tomorrows you are blessed to have, continue to take steps. You will get to the finish line knowing that you took a meaningful walk.
