It's happening. It's almost time. Next Friday, March 30, No Spectators: The Art of Burning Man exhibit opens at the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.. The show will close in phases in September 2018, and January 2019. In addition, half a dozen works are being installed in the Golden Triangle neighborhood until December 2018.
I lived in Northern Virginia or elsewhere outside of D.C. for almost 30 years, and I can tell you, this may be one of the coolest things to come to town. Especially lately, if you know what I mean? It will be a bit surreal to have so many Burners, Artists and friends gathered so close to the White House and it's current occupants. It's also great to know that we are being welcomed with open arms to bring our art and our culture right into the heart of the nations capital.
This recent article by the NYTimes gives great insight into the importance of this exhibition, and about how Burning Man is disrupting the traditional environment where art has been seen as a product to be collected, and instead placing value on the community, connections, education, and experience generated by creating and engaging with art together. I personally prefer to live my life as art, and to be connected to these vibrant people while we remind each other there is good, beauty, laughter, love, and joy still in the world.
There is ONE misstatement in the NYTimes article. The gift shop at the Renwick will be carrying my latest baby, the 2018-2019 Burning Man Calendar! I'll post about that separately.
Now, on to packing. It may rain in DC during the weekend. Well, if anyone can figure out how to pair galoshes with gala evening gowns, it's this crowd.

7 年Funny timing, as yesterday we stopped by Dogfish Head brewery and saw that amazing 5 Ton Crane treehouse, reassembled in front of their main building. I'll try my best to get over to the Renwick to see you!
