We're in for a blockbuster year
2022 was a fantastic year for film: The Batman. Nope. Top Gun: Maverick. Everything Everywhere All at Once. Morbius. (Okay, that last one was a joke. Morbius was an awful, awful film.) Point is, moviegoers were given treat after treat after treat last year—and as one myself, I couldn’t be happier.
Fortunately, it appears that 2023 is set to be another standout year: Dune: Part Two. Oppenheimer. Barbie. Shazam! Fury of the Gods. John Wick: Chapter 4. Despite many films coming out, there are only a select few that I am the most anticipated for, and I’d like to discuss them. (That being said, I’m not saying that the ones that I listed previously aren’t ones I’m not looking forward to, just the films I’m about to discuss are at the top of that list.)
Anyways, let’s begin!
Cruise Control
It’s hard to believe that the Mission: Impossible film series has been going strong for nearly thirty years now! But truth be told, it’s no surprise. The series has had a shockingly consistent track record, with each installment being more impactful and thrilling than the last. (The jump from the exciting Rogue Nation to the truly incredible Fallout immediately comes to mind.)
What ultimately makes the next installment—titled Dead Reckoning Part One—is that it will act as the beginning of the end for Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise). Cruise has been the face of the franchise since its first installment back in 1996, and to see his time with it draw to a close is sad, to say the least. I have been a fan of this series since Ghost Protocol, and with each film ramping up in both excitement and Cruise-filled chaos, I cannot wait to see what that madman has in store for us.
Mission: Impossible- Dead Reckoning Part One is set to release on July 14th.
The Groot of the Problem
The Guardians of the Galaxy might have last appeared in last year’s Thor: Love and Thunder, but their last solo outing was all the way back in 2017! Their films—directed by James Gunn—have suffered a bit of a delay since then, what with Gunn’s firing-and-rehiring by Disney, along with the director’s work on 2021’s The Suicide Squad and last year’s Peacemaker.
With that in the rearview mirror, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to come out this year, and from the tone of the official trailer, it’s set to be a darker film than its predecessors. The color palette is moodier, the song choice is more melancholic, and heck, there’s scene where Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill/Star-Lord is screaming in turmoil.
With this meant to be the finale of this trilogy, Gunn has confirmed that this will act as the swan song for this iteration of the Guardians. That led to many theorizing who could possibly die, most notably Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper) and Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista).

Considering Gunn’s impressive talent with melding goofy comedy with impactful emotion in the previous films, Vol.3 will surely tug at my heartstrings. The film is set to release on May 5th.
Your Mileage May Vary
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was such a groundbreaking film. It had inventive and creative animation, a focus on Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) instead of Peter Parker and dealt with the multiverse of Spider-People. (Sure, Spider-Man: Far From Home and Spider-Man: No Way Home would deal with that too, but not of this scale.)
Anyways, with the film’s massive success, it wasn’t shocking to find that there would be a sequel—or in this case, sequels. These films were originally titled Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse- Part One and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse- Part Two. However, the titles were soon changed to just Across the Spider-Verse and Beyond the Spider-Verse.
The official trailer for Across reveals that unlike the first film, Miles Morales will find himself catapulted through the Spider-Verse. He will encounter both familiar faces—such as Gwen Stacy/Spider-Woman (Hailee Steinfeld)—and deadly new foes, such Miguel O’Hara/Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac) and The Spot (Jason Schwartzman). What makes this film exciting to me is the sheer fact that it looks so much wilder and wackier than Into, and that is always a good sign to me! I won’t be surprised if it lives up to the hype.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is set to release on June 2.
