We’re announcing our device flexibility platform for utilities!

We’re announcing our device flexibility platform for utilities!

I’m excited to finally share what the team, Moritz Schrader , and I have been working on over the last two years. We are working towards a future of abundant green energy by orchestrating the world's electric devices. To roll this out at speed and scale, we’re building software for utilities to use these devices to generate new revenue streams.

We believe the world will not reduce its energy consumption. High-income countries are not significantly lowering their energy use. The rest, 7 billion people, are just getting started. [1]

We need to decouple energy from CO2 emissions - fast. The good news is that this is already happening.

Renewable energy production - solar and wind - is already and will stay the cheapest form of energy. As for energy consumers, we are electrifying everything - devices for heating, transportation, and industry representing 28.6 Gt of global emissions - because it will be cheaper than all alternatives. [2,3]

That sounds great. What’s the problem? Too much green electricity is produced when it’s not needed and too little when we do need it. We turn up our heating and cooling and plug in our car just as the sun sets.

There are many solutions to this problem, but only one that doesn’t require technological, regulatory, or other miracles: We must shift power consumption to favorable times wherever we can.

During sunny or windy times, heat pumps can pre-heat houses,?ACs pre-cool,?cars and home batteries charge, and industrial processes are ramped up. When the sun sets or the wind stops, we use the energy stored in batteries and hot water tanks until sunrise or the wind picks up again.

Why are we not doing this at scale today? The electricity space is incredibly complex. Many players have to be aligned: consumers, utilities, manufacturers, grid operators, regulators, and more.

Podero solves this tech and coordination problem. How? Financial incentives. We believe that we can only convince everyone to participate by distributing the massive cost savings generated by using more of the cheapest energy sources. This accelerates the decoupling of CO2 and energy.

Our software for utilities steers devices such as heat pumps, electric vehicles, and batteries to consume power when renewables produce cheap energy. Utilities use Podero to generate cost savings for their customers and to create new revenue streams through our electricity trading algorithms.

After two years, we’re collaborating with utilities across Germany, Austria and Scandinavia, manufacturers, and regulatory agencies. We’ve been grateful to welcome many smart and ambitious members to our team and are supported by a group of experienced founders and a government grant.

This is one of the most important things I’ll work on in my life. I’m very excited to share more in the months and years to come, but for now, it’s back to work on making electricity too cheap to meter ??
