Mental health and mental illness are not the same thing.

According to the?CDC, mental illness refers to “conditions that affect a person’s thinking, feeling, mood, or behavior.” These can include but aren’t limited to depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia.

Mental health reflects “our emotional, psychological, and social well-being.” Affecting “how we think, feel, and act,” mental health has a strong impact on the way we interact with others, handle problems, and make decisions. (mcleanhospital.org)

According to mind.org.uk the following factors could potentially result in a period of poor mental health:

·??????Childhood abuse, trauma, or neglect

·??????Social isolation or loneliness

·??????Experiencing discrimination and stigma, including racism

·??????Social disadvantage, poverty, or debt

·??????Bereavement (losing someone close to you)

·??????Severe or long-term stress

·??????Having a long-term physical health condition

·??????Unemployment or losing your job

·??????Homelessness or poor housing

·??????Being a long-term carer for someone

·??????Drug and alcohol misuse

·??????Domestic violence, bullying or other abuse as an adult

·??????Significant trauma as an adult, such as military combat, being involved in a serious incident in which you feared for your life, or being the victim of a violent crime

·??????Physical causes – for example, a head injury or a neurological condition such as epilepsy can have an impact on your behavior and mood. (It's important to rule out potential physical causes before seeking further treatment for a mental health problem).

Although lifestyle factors including work, diet, drugs and lack of sleep can all affect your mental health, if you experience a mental health problem there are usually other factors as well.

The key to best mental wellness is daily management of stress, awareness of how you are feeling, and lifestyle choices, to name a few.

Physical health problems significantly increase our risk of developing mental health problems, and vice versa.

Nearly one in three people with a long-term physical health condition also has a mental health problem, most often depression or anxiety.

How does my mental health affect my physical health?

Research shows that people with a mental health problem are more likely to have a preventable physical health condition such as heart disease.

Mental health problems can come with physical symptoms. Our bodies and minds are not separate, so it’s not surprising that mental ill health can affect your body. Depression can come with headaches, fatigue, and digestive problems, and anxiety can create an upset stomach, for example. Other symptoms can include insomnia, restlessness, and difficulty concentrating. (mind.org.uk)

What can we do to improve our mental health?

Check in and ask yourself how you are doing. How often do you actually ask yourself how you are doing and answer truthfully? If you are feeling overwhelmed, sad, anxious, lack of motivation, angry, frustrated, unable to cope with everyday problems, physical pain, reaching for medication or alcohol to feel better, these are just few indicators your mental health needs care.

Take a break. Daily responsibilities, when balanced and managed properly allow us to feel we are operating in our purpose, productive, constructive, and contributing to our families, jobs, and communities. When these things feel like they are consuming and a slog, it’s important to take a break. Disconnect and guilt free, take a break and really feel into the moment of releasing your responsibilities in that moment.

Incorporate healthy well-being practices. Everything from your diet and nutrition, to sleep and spiritual and mental practices affect your mental wellness. What can you do to improve which foods and beverages you consume? What can you do about exposure to environments that require too much of you? Incorporating self-care tools to balance your nervous system, refresh, and reinvigorate you are essential for feeling better in the moment (management) as well as long term support (preventative self-care) for your best mental well-being.?

Here's to you, your happiness, health, and well-being! When you live your best life, you make the world a better place.
