Create Your Positive Trigger

We have heard of being triggered. Exactly what do we mean by a triggering event or item?

A triggering event or item is something that elicits a strong emotional response or reaction in an individual due to its association with a past trauma, negative experience, or challenging situation. Triggering events or items can come in many forms, such as a certain word, image, sound, or smell, and can evoke a range of negative emotions and responses, such as fear, anxiety, anger, or sadness.

For individuals who have experienced trauma or difficult life experiences, triggering events or items can be particularly challenging, as they can activate memories and emotions associated with the past trauma, leading to feelings of distress and discomfort.

It's important to recognize triggering events or items and to have strategies for coping with the associated emotions and reactions. This may involve seeking support from a therapist or counselor, practicing mindfulness and relaxation techniques, or engaging in self-care activities that help to promote emotional regulation and well-being.

However, triggers can be positive and intentionally incorporating positive triggers can lead to wonderful benefits.

While triggers are often associated with negative emotions or memories, they can also be used to elicit positive emotions and behaviors.

For example, a positive trigger could be a particular song or piece of music that evokes feelings of joy or inspiration, leading to positive actions such as dancing or singing along. Similarly, a positive trigger could be a particular scent or aroma that reminds someone of a happy memory or experience, leading to positive emotions and behaviors.

By identifying and using positive triggers, individuals can harness the power of positive emotions to inspire and motivate positive actions and behaviors. This can be especially useful in situations where one may be feeling stuck or unmotivated, as positive triggers can help to shift one's mindset and energy towards more positive and productive outcomes.

There are several benefits of turning a positive trigger into a habit for self-growth, personal development, and happiness.

Here are some of the key benefits:

  1. Improved mood and well-being: Engaging in positive behaviors and actions can boost your mood and overall well-being, leading to greater happiness, contentment, and fulfillment.
  2. Increased self-awareness: By using a positive trigger to cultivate positive habits, you become more aware of your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, which can help you identify areas for growth and improvement.
  3. Enhanced self-discipline: Building positive habits requires consistent effort and self-discipline, which can strengthen your willpower and ability to stay focused on your goals.
  4. Greater resilience: By consistently engaging in positive behaviors, you can build resilience and a sense of inner strength that helps you to cope with challenges and setbacks more effectively.
  5. Improved relationships: Positive habits and behaviors can help you to build stronger, more positive relationships with others, as you become more compassionate, empathetic, and supportive.

Overall, turning a positive trigger into a habit can have a profound impact on your personal growth and development, helping you to become the best version of yourself and live a more fulfilling and meaningful life.

Using a physical object as a positive trigger can be an easy tool and effective way to anchor positive emotions and memories.

Here are some easy to follow steps:

  1. Choose an object: Choose a physical object that has positive associations for you, such as a favorite piece of jewelry, a treasured photograph, or a special souvenir from a memorable trip.
  2. Recall positive memories: Spend some time focusing on positive memories or experiences associated with the object. Allow yourself to fully experience the positive emotions associated with these memories.
  3. Create an anchor: While focusing on these positive emotions, create an anchor by associating a physical action or sensation with the positive memory or experience. For example, you could lightly tap your thumb and forefinger together, take a deep breath, or visualize a positive image.
  4. Repeat: Repeat the process, using the physical object as the trigger for the positive memories and experiences, and the anchor as a way to quickly access the positive emotions associated with them.

By using a physical object as a positive trigger and anchoring it to positive emotions and memories, you can create a powerful tool for improving your mood and well-being, especially in moments of stress or anxiety.

Take action! Nurturing your success to experience your best life requires some simple changes.

Setting up positive triggers around your home can be a great way to create a more positive and uplifting environment, and to cultivate positive habits and behaviors. Here are some ideas:

  • Inspiring quotes: Print out or write down some of your favorite motivational quotes and display them in places where you will see them often, such as on your bathroom mirror, on your desk, or on your refrigerator.
  • Plants and flowers: Bring some life and color into your home with potted plants or fresh flowers. Seeing these natural elements can help to boost your mood and reduce stress.
  • Music: Create playlists of your favorite upbeat songs and play them when you're getting ready in the morning, cooking dinner, or doing household chores. Healing music while meditating can be used to deepen the experience.
  • Gratitude reminders: Place a notepad and pen in a visible location, such as by your bedside or on your kitchen counter, and make it a habit to jot down things you are grateful for each day.
  • Exercise reminders: Set up a designated exercise space in your home, with workout equipment or yoga mats readily available. Seeing these items can remind you to prioritize exercise and movement in your daily routine.
  • Photos and memories: Display photos of happy memories and loved ones in prominent places around your home, such as on your mantle or in a gallery wall. These visual reminders can help to evoke positive emotions and feelings of connection.

By setting up positive triggers around your home, you can create an environment that fosters positivity, inspiration, and personal growth.

What positive trigger will you create today for yourself for health, happiness, and healing??

I love this habit! I have many positive statements on my bathroom mirror. My favorite quote sits in a frame on the bathroom counter where I see it every day. "When your vision becomes more powerful than your memory, your future becomes more real than your past." ~Roger Hamilton

Such an important point. We have a lot of dialogue around trauma triggers, which is important, but there's great value in recognizing the things the trigger happiness, love, inspiration, and delight in our lives so we can consciously seek them out.

I often write out quotes that inspire me or remind me of universal truths on post-it notes and display them in my office. These quotes help me consciously choose what I want to focus on and help me stay more present in each moment.
