Wellington recognised for climate leadership.
Wellington has just scored an A on climate action.
The global non-profit, CDP , who runs the world’s environmental disclosure system, leverages its environmental impact ratings to motivate climate action. ?To score an A, a city must have an emissions inventory, a climate action plan and?an adaptation goal to demonstrate how it will tackle climate hazards.
Over 900 cities were rated on climate action in 2023 and just over one in ten cities received an A.
Since 2020, Pōneke’s emissions have fallen by 10%, and in the past year alone, cycling has increased by 40%. We’re working to reduce emissions from our landfill, and we provide seed funding and advice to amplify climate mahi being done by local businesses and communities.
While our efforts so far have focused on mitigation, unfortunately decades of inaction mean we must also adapt to the impacts of climate change that we can no longer avoid.
So, I intend to advocate strongly to ensure funding and regulations are developed by the government, to prepare our communities for change - especially our most at-risk.
CDP also celebrated Wellington and other A-listers, for showing that urgent and impactful climate action is achievable, particularly during a challenging global economic situation.?
However, we must not lose sight of what the science is telling us: this action needs to go further, and it needs to go faster.?
Let’s be the best Green Capital City in the world Wellington doesn’t really have an identify or point of difference let’s make it that.
Hetting a proper bus network would be great. Would love the buses to be more frequent and oh electric buses would be great.

1 年I would love to see those cycling statistics. I agree we need to be taking action to tackle climate issues, I just wonder if we need to think about our underground infrastructure and the impact that has on the environment when our water infrastructure is failing to the point we are placing water restrictions on our communities, and asbestos and other nasties are impacting our groundwater and contaminating our land. Are we just putting lipstick on a pig by only focusing on emissions? I don’t think the millions we are spending on cycle lanes are going to fix the problem. Also, as a side note where oh where will the lithium for all those electric vehicles come from when it’s not from an infinite supply?
