While good things take time, time also provides the opportunity to get things right. Tākina – the Wellington Convention and Exhibition Centre – has and will continue to benefit from the detailed work that today sees it becoming a landmark in the cityscape. It’s also the first convention centre in New Zealand to be awarded 5-Star Green Star certification, representing New Zealand excellence for environmental sustainability.
Tākina’s green star certification means there are many design features that together will result in a 60 percent reduction in energy use and a 66 percent reduction in operational carbon emissions, when benchmarked against a comparable new build.
“With its focus on reducing energy and water, sustainable materials use, and renewable energy capability, Tākina has already become a landmark for Wellington’s sustainable future and provides a blueprint for other initiatives across the city,” says Wellington mayor Andy Foster. This investment is an important step to Te Atakura – First to Zero, the official roadmap that will ensure Wellington becomes a net zero emission city by 2050.
