The WELLGlossary #21
Yes, there is such a thing! How can wellness cause anxiety when it is supposed to be a path to balance and harmony?
Anxiety is something that probably we all experience a little (or much) too often. Anxiety may be rooted in some social issue, or it is triggered by a financial situation. People may suffer from status anxiety because of pressure they perceive from their peers. Or by body dysmorphia, or because of being bullied on social media, or by climate change, or by many other things.
It can be stated that wellness has become a commodity. Customers may find ‘wellness’ products on the shelves of or in the online stores of household appliances, linens and clothing, sport and leisure equipment, grocery and drug stores, etc. From dietary trends through new exercise regimes to the latest holistic approaches consumers can find unlimited products and services with the promise of making them feel well, or at least better. Social media platforms offer unlimited variety of wellness advice and recommendations. Brands, celebrities and/or influencers also advocate certain products, styles and looks.
All of this contributes to a new form of anxiety. What might have been a status anxiety, now being extended to wellness anxiety. Have walked enough steps today? Have we had enough hydration? Did we meditate well? Did we bring the ‘right’ lunch to the office?
In the era of information overload, one may find it difficult to decide what could really bring wellness. New diets, exercise regimes, garments, etc. are labelled as the next-revolutionary items in wellness every day.
