Wellbeing Initiatives
Improving wellbeing in the workplace has been proven to increase job satisfaction and motivation as well as productivity. It's more important than ever for employers to implement wellbeing initiatives. If an employer encourages their employees to look after their physical and mental health, they will have a better workforce. Although hard to put a monetary value on wellness initiatives, there is definitely a return on investment.
Talking to employers in the last 12 months, below are some initiatives that they have been implementing:
1. Flexible work practices including remote working
2. Actively promoting work-life balance
3. Payment of health insurance and subsidizing gym memberships
4. EAP's which includes payment of a set number of counselling sessions per year for each employee
4. Promoting healthy eating by having fruit & healthy snacks in the workplace
5. Staff wellbeing days and/or an extra annual leave day for wellness activities
6. Resilience training to improve personal development
7. Standing desks or exercise ball seats
8. Team fitness activities
9. Encouraging lunch breaks and encouraging people to get away from their desks every now and then
10. Walking meetings
11. On-site yoga and meditation classes
12. Subsidizing personal development courses and in-house workshops and webinars delivered by experienced and fully qualified mental health professionals
13. Volunteer days with community organizations (research shows selfless acts of kindness improves wellbeing and decreases depression)
14. Supporting national awareness days like R U OK? Day
15. Lunch and learn sessions?
16. Quarterly team away days
Wellbeing initiatives don't have to be costly. Minimal investment can produce effective results. A healthier and happier workforce translates into a more productive and engaged workforce.
