As a CPA who has worked many hats and who has worked with people from all backgrounds and walks of life, I have had a front-row seat to see the wellness practices of successful people. I have not always been meticulous about pursuing wellness in my own life and have used excuses to rationalize why I was not taking the best care of myself. It was not until my father passed away that I found myself fighting for my life in a sense. The grief made me face an ugly truth- I was a workaholic and I was neglecting myself for as long as I could remember.

?I inherited my father’s work ethic and his flat feet. My father used to ask me how it was that I was always busy and if I was creating projects for myself. He remind me to live a full life and do things that young people do while I was young. If my father were alive today, he would have questioned my pandemic living, to say the least.?

?Since losing my father in January 2014, I have been trying to build a life I do not need a vacation from, which affords me the flexibility and funds to travel as I wish. I have been doing deep work to have optimal health and self-awareness. I have been trying to unlearn bad habits and heal from past workplace-related trauma.

?I have realized that to be well as you excel is deep work that pays a high return on investment (ROI.) It feels so invigorating to try new things and take risks to grow. It feels good to have the confidence and courage to show up in your own life. It feels good to be a creator of things that help other people curate their best lives.

?One of the revelations of this wellness journey has been that I am truly the CEO of my life and that I could have done a better job at playing my role in the past. The time spent worrying about things could have been spent learning things. The time spent proving my worth to people who had no interest in investing in me could have been spent seeking sponsors and getting coaching and mentoring others.

?I have learned that mindset, consistency, and grace can work wonders. When you view your failures as learning opportunities and your losses as silver linings, your mindset is different. When you set up sustainable routines, rituals, rules to live by, and are consistent, the muscle memory kicks in, and you become a creature of habit. When you hold yourself accountable yet show yourself grace, and you celebrate small wins.

?I am a work in progress, to say the least. I feel like a caterpillar who is almost a butterfly some days. The growing pains are real. But I am willing to pay the price to curate my best life.

?As The Duchess of Accounting, my mission if I chose to accept it (I do!)?includes helping others to curate their best life. Using all of my expertise and experience to help others attain financial wellness and holistic wellness matters to me. I want people to be able to live life and become successful on their terms. Helping others create such a lifestyle matters to me.

?Technology and the tax code play an important role in curating our best lives these days, as does create a wellness practice that works for you.

Today, I ask you to carve out an hour to do the following:

  • Reflect on what bought you the most joy as a child
  • Ask yourself what you felt when you did the activity, etc.
  • Ask yourself how you can take 30 minutes a day or week to indulge in this activity
  • Access your daily routine and ask yourself what needs to change
  • Access what you would like to add to your daily routine
  • Think about who are five people in your life that can hold you accountable for boundaries and wellness practices
  • Note what wellness and success mean to you.

Girl, you will love my new FAVORITE morning song. Look up "Affirmations for the Grown Ass Woman" by Toni Jones. The track "Work Ethic" is so aligned to this beautiful post.
