Well, so much for taking a break…

Hi folks. At the end of January I decided to take a break from working on specific projects for a while. I had just completed a year-long engagement with a company and had trained more than 220 of its people in the use of the Scrum Framework. I decided to take some time to pursue some other initiatives, including working on the book I’ve been writing.

Despite these good intentions, the break hasn’t lasted very long. Another company needs me and I ended up saying “yes”. On March 20th I’ll be starting another “Agile Transformation” engagement with another Silicon Valley company. I’ve made a part-time commitment to them that will last at least 3 months (and possibly all year).

I didn’t make much progress on the book. Right now my plan is to devote nights and weekends to completing it. I hope to bring it out sometime this summer. (We’ll see…)

The one thing I DID accomplish is something I’m quite excited about. I’ve taught hundreds of people to pass the Professional Scrum Master Level I (PSM I) assessment administered by Scrum.org. (So have many other trainers in the world.) What I spent my time doing was to create a new approach to teaching the Scrum Framework. The result is a class for preparing to take the PSM II assessment.

I’m testing this approach with a selected group of my PSM I students. We held the first class session today. So far the results are quite good. If all goes well, six weeks from now these students will attempt the PSM II assessment from Scrum.org. If they pass and earn their PSM II certifications, I will have proven out this new approach. I’ll then offer the classes to the general public.

(As far as I know, this class will be the only classroom based preparation for the PSM II assessment available anywhere. If my experiment works, it will open up the door of advanced Scrum certification to everyone who currently holds the PSM I.)

I’m keeping my fingers crossed! Watch this space for updates and announcements about the success (or failure) of this experimental class.

Welcome back to the Scrum training world! I hope that you post upcoming classes for PSM II, III and beyond because I would love to participate, if possible. :)
