My friend and associate Jeff Smith and I (who are motorcycling partners as well) were discussing an article he sent me about the top 10 motorcycling roads in the United States.
Strangely the article only listed one in Colorado and, that one "Peak to Peak" highway that runs more or less from I-70 around Idaho Springs to Estes Park.
I called BS on the article, saying first that while "Peak to Peak" is a nice ride (it's sound end is only a few miles from my home) but, that in my opinion it's #4, #5 or further down the list for Colorado. Also, that there are a number of rides in Colorado nicer than the other top 10 that they listed.
My #1. Independence Pass.
Followed by Rocky Mountain National Park, The road to the top of Mount Evans, and a few others.
Anyway, that conversation got me thinking so I decided to take 3 or 4 days in one of my favorite places: Aspen Colorado, and take what I believe to be the #1 ride in the.United States - Independence Pass that runs from Leadville to Aspen.
It was in-fact an incredible ride, gorgeous weather. It tops out over 12,000 foot elevation @ the continental divide and, runs along the long abandoned Pony Express with abandoned stations for that along the way.
Well, best laid plans were a bit derailed when I discovered that the city of Aspen apparently doesn't like to maintain the road coming into town - that's where I hit a crater that ended up feeling a bit like the the famous Meteor crater in Arizona.
It was enough to knock the side bags off of by BMW Motorcycle, to blow out the front tire, and bend the front wheel. Exciting. Anyway, ended up being a choice of towing to Grand Junction or, Denver (Lakewood, Colorado) - since I live in Evergreen just outside of Lakewood the longer (more expensive) two was the better choice.
Anyway once that was dealt with I did manage a couple of very relaxing days in one of the most beautiful places on earth. A nice 3 day vacation ahead of a vacation weekend, week for July 4th
I'm hoping you'll have a safe holiday weekend, and week.
