Well-being and Comfort in the Workplace

What Well-Being in the Workplace is Really All About?

Since 2020, our in-house Workspace Design Team has created over 6,000 unique designs for clients trying to adapt their offices to the “new way to work.” Through this process, we have identified three core concepts for future office design.??

If you missed it, our first trend was on Designing a Flexible Workplace: https://www.dhirubhai.net/pulse/how-design-flexible-workplace-vari. We are now continuing the journey. This time it’s all about well-being.?

Well-being at work has changed

There’s no doubt you’ve heard of the concept “workplace wellness” but what does it mean in the future of workplaces?? How can you implement this into the very ethos and design of your office??

Let’s begin by unpacking what well-being in the workplace is all about - comfort, empathy, and support. Companies worldwide have attempted to introduce this in their offices, with some being more successful than others.??

Today, well-being is a core design principle –? not just an attempt to offer employees a perk they may not want. (Remember the bean bag and pizza phase instead of an ergonomic office and raise?)?

Creating well-being in the office helps counter burnout. It creates a working environment allows your team to perform at their best. After all, we are all human, and sympathy for the human condition can significantly impact people’s lives.??

The key is to implement wellness concepts at multiple levels. For example, in our experience in working with design firms and directly with clients, we’ve seen the impact workspaces can have on employees' physical and mental health.??

The office, by nature, is a passive space, and we’ve seen the ailments that can result from sitting for hours on end every day. Therefore, incorporating movement into the workday supports employee well-being and comfort.??

Remember, wellness is best implemented when it’s well-rounded—factoring in your employees' mind, body, and spirit. Each element needs to be considered, from comfortable working conditions and positive team morale to physical and mental support.??

?Some things our Design Team incorporates are:?

  • Zen zones (a calming space to clear your mind)?
  • Resimercial design (blending the comforts of home in a corporate space)?
  • Active workstations (hello, standing desk)?

There are many ways to create a wellness-centered workplace, no matter the budget you have. This is an investment in your staff and often results in intangible benefits over the long term. Ask yourself : does your brand offer wellness benefits, and is your office as conducive to employee well-being as possible??
