Welcoming PepsiCo to AgMission on one-year anniversary: scaling up climate-smart agriculture

I am proud to mark the one-year anniversary of the Agriculture Climate Partnership with the Foundation for Food & Agriculture Research (FFAR) by sharing some new developments that will help us move closer to our goal of reaching net negative for greenhouse gas emissions in agriculture.

First, the movement has been rebranded as AgMission to elevate our charge to develop and implement climate-smart solutions at scales previously unimagined. Within the development phase, AgMission has funded a National Academy of Sciences review to identify how to best implement specific practices necessary to create negative greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The review is creating a Scientific Roadmap to a Carbon Negative Agriculture System to implement the most promising strategies to achieve carbon negative agriculture.

Second, PepsiCo has built on this momentum by joining AgMission as a founding partner with a $5 million commitment. As part of PepsiCo’s endeavors to further agriculture, they will support the development of AgMission projects across three major workstreams: driving behavior change across the food value chain, supporting climate-resilient supply chains and enhancing the impact of current cutting-edge PepsiCo-funded projects that contribute to a body of knowledge around the most effective ways to partner with farmers for improving food system outcomes.

It has been wonderful to see the ideas born out of the inaugural Honor the Harvest leadership forum in 2019 develop into this powerful partnership between Foundation for Food & Agriculture Research (FFAR). AgMission is a powerful partnership to drive the best science, data and business intelligence solutions to advance climate-smart solutions for farmers and ranchers.

Thank you to the team who worked so hard over the past year to make this partnership a reality: Sally Rockey, Julie Reynes, LaKisha Odom, Sergio Furman, Sarah Goldberg, Kashyap Choksi, Lauren Winstel, Colleen Klemczewski, Rashada Alexander, Joanne Ragalie, Amanda Raster, Ladonna Lee and Molly Spence.

And special thanks to our first movers Jim Andrew, Christine Daugherty and Margaret Henry!

The time is now for science to quantify the contribution that farmers and ranchers can make toward stewardship practices that capture carbon. The current carbon market is fragmented, but with large scale collaboration farmers and ranchers can be valued for reducing GHG emissions while continuing to provide safe, healthy, sufficient food for all.
