Welcoming Dr. Oona Hayes to the HDC!

Spring means new beginnings and it feels like the perfect time for our team at the Health Data Coalition (HDC) to grow. HDC is run by a small team working closely with our board of directors and partners like GPSC and Doctors of BC. Together, our hope is that the HDC represents a true expression of the collective experience and knowledge of physicians, partners, and stakeholders.?

This month, we’re thrilled to welcome Dr. Oona Hayes MD, CCFP, FCFP as our new Medical Director. Dr. Hayes’ experience as a practicing family physician compliments her passion for health systems and the value of data to support practice and system improvement. Her belief that engaging with practice data allows family physicians to reach their highest potential as health advocates, which enhances the work HDC does.?

Dr. Hayes is active with BC Family Doctors, Doctors of BC and the Practice Support Program, where she advocates for support of patient, physician and team experiences of primary care. She recently joined the Eagle Creek High Complexity Care Team as a physician team member working to reduce acute care utilization and improve patient health and care satisfaction.

When meeting Dr. Hayes, we discussed her passion for system improvement and data normalization, as well as her curiosity for science and the practice of medicine. Her experience with process maps, facilitating practice-based learning group and peer mentoring will be great assets to our organization and many physicians around the province. Dr. Hayes’ vision aligns with our goals to ensure HDC is a valuable resource for reflection and learning.?

We have an exciting few months ahead with the full team at HDC. Physician enrolment and engagement in the use of HDC Discover continues to grow. There are over 850 physicians with access to their own aggregate results within HDC Discover, where many physicians are seeing their baselines for the first time during their GPSC HDC Payment Program data orientation. These initial discussions have ignited physician curiosity, which will organically fuel discussions with their physician peers to generate improvement initiatives for their patients and communities. As the overall data set grows, we see the natural progression to support Divisions with their community level aggregates for to support learning programs, resource planning and other activities. Having a Medical Director like Dr. Hayes will support ongoing system developments, as well as supporting her peers’ confidence to incorporate data in their QI practice.?

The HDC team is pleased to welcome Dr Hayes! We look forward to working, learning and growing together.?
