Welcoming the 119th Congress with our credit union focus
Jim Nussle
Chief Executive Officer, AMERICA’S CREDIT UNIONS. Our mission is to advocate for and advance an environment where credit unions thrive.
With the 119th Congress sworn in today, America’s Credit Unions, leagues, and credit unions welcomed them at several events over the last few days. This begins the important step in ensuring credit unions and their members are top of mind with lawmakers throughout this session.
We worked hard to elect a pro-credit union Congress, a group that will ultimately decide on key, expiring provisions of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and look to reduce spending.
That means we must ensure the majority in both chambers solidly say “no” to any changes to the credit union tax status. America’s Credit Unions, leagues, and credit unions are having those conversations right now. We have resources at the ready, with more to come, to tackle this issue directly.?
We welcomed many of the new members of Congress and their staffs during open houses on Capitol Hill and at a reception we hosted at the U.S. Capitol today.
But things move fast in Washington, D.C., and by next week we’ll see committees in place and congressional business underway, as work begins in earnest.
We’ve worked closely with our members to create a dynamic advocacy agenda for this year, and we’ll have more information coming to members—and policymakers—on our credit union priorities next week.
Thank you to all who took the time to travel to Washington, D.C., to welcome the new Congress, and here’s to an exciting year for credit unions. ?

Taking nothing for granted in 2025
I wrote in CUInsight this week about why credit union advocacy is as important as ever in the opening days of the new Congress. The future success and relevancy of the credit union movement depends on it, to not only protect the credit union tax status but to reintroduce and move forward the many bipartisan credit union bills introduced in the last Congress. ?

President Jimmy Carter dies at 100?
Former President Jimmy Carter died this week at age 100, leaving behind a legacy that truly exemplifies “people helping people.’ He signed legislation in March 1980 granting credit unions the right to issue share drafts (the result of a successful advocacy campaign) and spent his post-presidency advancing humanitarian causes, especially those aimed at helping marginalized communities. ?

The League launches to serve credit union in 4 states?
Congratulations to the newly launched The League of Credit Unions & Affiliates, now serving credit unions in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Virginia under the leadership of President Samantha Beeler. Credit unions across those states serve more than 31 million members, and The League will champion their voices at the local, state, and federal level. ?
Thank you for your proactive approach in engaging with the new Congress and advocating for credit unions and their members to help sustain their impact on communities nationwide.
