Waterford Music Week: Celebrating Local Talent
Waterford Music Week is an initiative that WLR’s Head of Music, Ray Colclough brought into fruition in 2021.? His goal is to showcase and support some of Waterford’s finest independent artists on-air, online, and across WLRs social media.? Waterford is no stranger to churning out singers and bands that go on to international fame over the years. Val Doonican, Brendan Boyer, and of course Gilbert O’Sullivan who’s still going strong spring to mind. Right now, we have the likes of Moncrieff who is doing huge things and how can you not mention Waterford’s biggest dance band and festival favourites, King Kong Company.
Waterford Music Week ran from Monday, August 7th?to Friday, August 11th?during which time WLR played a huge selection of Waterford Artists across all shows from Breakfast to Bed. Including the aforementioned Moncrief, we heard music from some upcoming singers and bands like Carrie Baxter, Sara Lou, 2Time Charlie, RayaMae, Backroad Smokers Club, and Cal Pacino to name just a few. WLR wrapped up the week with a 9-hour live showcase on O'Connell Street in the city and people turned out in their 100s to support these local bands. It was all brought to you by IMRO, Summer In The City and Sanofi who are constantly supporting the arts in Waterford.

WLR Book Review: 'The Monsignor’
Discover our latest WLR book review, a must-read recommended by Dymphna Nugent.
In "The Monsignor" by Colm Keane and Una O'Hagan, the tumultuous life of Ardmore-born Monsignor T.J. Capel unfolds. Once a celebrated preacher, his story is one of fame and infamy. This book delves into Capel's rise within the clergy, his charismatic appeal, and his controversial affairs, all set against a backdrop of changing social and cultural landscapes in Europe and the United States.
Despite his dark side, Capel left an indelible mark on the Catholic Church, making this a riveting read filled with scandal and intrigue.
Dymphna shares her thoughts: "At just over 200 pages, this book is a very enjoyable read. It has all the components that a riveting read should have- excitement, scandal, a rogue for a protagonist, and a sense on closing the final pages that this man will remain with the reader for a long time to come."
Don't miss out on this captivating recommendation!
Explore the Ryder Cup 2023 with WLR
WLR had the privilege of sending our very own Ray Scott to the lush greens of the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in Rome to deliver all the exhilarating moments of the Ryder Cup 2023.
From Tuesday, September 26th, we've been on the ground, capturing the essence of this prestigious event — from the grand opening ceremonies on Thursday, to the intense practice sessions, right through to the final putt on Sunday.
Our live feeds directly from the course to the studio gave us a front-row seat to the world of golf throughout the week. It was an incredible week.
Special thanks to Suir Engineering for sponsoring the fantastic coverage.
