As we step into a new week and make our first transition from summer (the months of May - August - not the heat) to the beginning of fall, I want to share 5 lessons learned from Hurricane Idalia that struck Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas. While hurricanes are dreadful and bring immense challenges, they can also serve as insightful teachers if we are willing to learn.
1. Every Conflict is an Opportunity
Life often confronts us with two perspectives— the triangle of Victim, Persecutor, and Rescuer, or the lens of Creator, Challenger, and Coach. Hurricane Idalia was undoubtedly a Challenger in the grand scheme of things. It wasn't just a natural calamity, but also an opportunity to recalibrate, think, and take a hard look at the inner workings of our lives. The experience strengthened family bonds and taught us to adapt, persevere, and find opportunities in the face of adversity.?
What can we learn from each challenge we face. How can we continue to become an observer of challenge and conflict vs. getting swept up in it?
2. Preparation is the Key to Success
If Hurricane Idalia reinforced one thing, it's the importance of preparation. Having a checklist, knowing your evacuation plan, and understanding what resources to tap into can make the difference between chaotic frenzy and managed order. The saying, "Failing to prepare is preparing to fail," rings ever so true.?
So as you step into this fall season, whether you're launching a new business project or planning a family outing, how are you going above and beyond with your preparation to alleviate stress and set the stage for success.
3. Get in a Foxhole with Friends, Family, and People You Enjoy
Usually, our family opts for a hotel during evacuation. However, this year, my wise wife suggested that we go to a friend’s house (after we were luck enough to get the invite). The idea was not just to stay safe, but to make the most of a trying situation by being with people who uplift us.?
It turned out to be one of the best decisions we made—strengthening our bonds, easing our worries, and creating fond memories in the process. As you navigate the highs and lows of the upcoming season, surround yourself with people you genuinely enjoy.?
Who would you want to be stuck on a six-hour layover with? Perhaps these are the people that should be in your "foxhole."

4. Communication and Over-Communication
In the face of imminent danger like Hurricane Idalia, clear and frequent communication is vital. At Fitlife Foods , we convened our Emergency Management Committee twice daily and disseminated information to our team. Over-communication can be a lifesaver in emergency situations, but it's equally valuable in our day-to-day professional and personal lives.?
Whether it's a project update, family plans, or a heart-to-heart with a close friend, never underestimate the power of effective communication. How are you over-communicating and giving praise more often in trying situations?
5. Experience Matters
This wasn't our first rodeo. Over the years, the constant preparation and response to situations like these have created a well of knowledge. Experience taught us to trust reliable sources like Denis Philips from ABC Action News and to ignore sensationalist ones like the Weather Channel. It has shown us the importance of a learning mindset—reading, absorbing, and preparing for what lies ahead.?
How are challenging experiences, good or bad, equipping you to face future challenges better prepared?
So, here's hoping we face no more hurricanes this season, and as we move into fall, let's use these lessons as stepping stones for a successful and fulfilling journey ahead.
