EU introduces new Batteries Regulation
The new regulations aim to encourage battery recycling.
A new law aiming to ensure batteries are collected, reused and recycled in Europe has come into force this week.
The European Commission (EC) says the new regulations will make sure that batteries have a low carbon footprint and that less harmful substances and raw materials from non-EU countries are used to create the items. This is intended to support the shift to a more circular economy and increase the security of raw materials and energy supply.
Under the new regulations companies will need to identify, prevent and address social and environmental risks involved in the sourcing, processing and trading of the raw materials in their batteries. In the future, the regulations will gradually introduce new requirements. For example, by 2027, consumers in the EU will be able to remove and replace portable batteries inside their products at any point in their lifecycle. Consumers will also be able to scan a QR code on a battery's label to see a digital passport of information.
