RECAP: THE PIE Live India 2025

The PIE Live India took place on 31 January at The Lalit New Delhi. It was a truly global conference with 326 people and 184?organisations in attendance from more than 11 different countries, and our guests had the opportunity to hear from 66?speakers and attend 17?unique sessions.?

The PIE Live India shone a light on India's growing influence on the global workforce and its potential to lead in the "Asian century".

The opening keynote set the stage for the day's discussions. Shitij Kapur, President of Kings College London, emphasised that "university education's meaning and purpose is changing", positioning India as a rising competitor in international education.

Debashis Chatterjee, Director of IIM Kozhikode, echoed these thoughts while adding that India's potential is largely untapped. “India is a country of 1.5 billion, and the capital here lies dormant”, he stated.

“University education’s meaning and purpose is changing... India could become a major competitor in the international education sector.” Shitij Kapur, King's College London

A core focus of the conference was on India’s growing importance in the Transnational Education (TNE) sector. India’s regulatory shifts are unlocking new opportunities for international institutions, leading to a surge in foreign universities entering the market.

Andrew Atherton, Vice President of International and Engagement of University of Southampton, described the rapid launch of the UK’s first Indian branch campus in Gurgaon as “fast, frenetic, and exciting,” with over 300 applications rolling in ahead of its August opening.

Other global institutions are also making strategic moves into India, adapting their models to better fit the local student experience.

“What we’ve learned over the past year is that simply bringing an Australian model here doesn’t always work –?you have to adapt and find the right mix that resonates with Indian students,” noted Ravneet Pawha, Vice President (Global Engagement) and CEO (South Asia) of Deakin University.

The PIE Live India 2025 made one thing clear: India’s education sector is no longer just evolving – it’s leading the future of global learning. With international collaborations, regulatory reforms, and research-driven innovation at its core, the next decade will define India’s role on the world stage.
