Welcome to the team (everyone!)
We have grown quickly this year, with 24 new joiners to the UK team. Building on our core scientific expertise, we have welcomed colleagues with the engineering design, operational and corporate experience necessary to deploy our carbon removal solution at scale. The commitment and passion for tackling climate change has been fantastic to see. This spans from accomplished professionals leaving blue chip companies to join our start-up across to postdoc researchers that have the opportunity to work on any number of fascinating global issues choosing to dedicate their time to this solution. While we will continue to grow, this core team gives us the strong footing needed to start deploying commercial facilities.
Last week we held a two-day annual planning workshop. This gave an opportunity for each of the teams to share with the whole company what they've achieved in 2022 and their objectives for 2023. We've made tremendous progress over over the last 12 months and the pace of activity continues to increase but there's still a lot to be done. One common thread through all of the discussions was that we really do believe carbon capture & sequestration using marine algae in desert locations is one of the most efficient and scalable methods of high quality CDR, whether that's from an engineering, scientific or commercial perspective. We're certainly not aware of anything that can give this level of permanence and direct measurability at the price point we're targeting without causing some other indirect issue (eg nutrient depletion) or running into scale issues (eg increasing haulage costs).
The year ahead will be a busy one for the team, starting with commissioning our new fully-automated production system at the existing three hectare R&D site in Morocco (thanks to Innovate UK for their support!) and concluding with ground-breaking of our thirty hectare demonstration site. The thirty hectare site, while small compared to our 2024 plans, will already be the world's largest algae production facility by an order of magnitude.
