Life isn't easy.
The most successful people you know (in person and on TV) are often gliding just like a swan.
Picture a swan...
Graceful and elegant on the water and paddling like crazy under the surface.
Which means that what they are constantly maintaining a balance between:
- Staying afloat.
- Keeping moving.
- Avoiding dangerous obstacles.
- Keeping away from predators.
- Finding food.
- Leading their little ones to safety.
- Being alert for extraordinary dangers.
- Maintaining an elegant exterior.
- Fighting and kill when necessary.
- Carefully assessing rivals who may want to steal their territory.
Sounds familiar?
It's built into every part of nature.
Every animal, bird, fish, reptile, mammal whatever goes through this.
The only difference as human beings is we get to rationalize and think about it.
Everything else just gets on with it.
Lessons?
- Stop whining. You are not special, singled out or the chosen one. You are not alone in this either. Unless you choose to be.
- Ask for help from others. There is safety in numbers as a network, tribe, mastermind group or mentorship.
- Stay on your toes. It's actually how we are genetically engineered to be. Outside of our comfort zone and fighting for our survival. The houses, shopping malls and traffic jams are man-made elements that can confuse our senses and make us feel inadequate.
- Calculate each encounter. What are the possible outcomes? You may not be able to win every fight, so only fight if you know you can win. Train, practice, get protection in numbers or whatever it takes to even the odds in your favour.
- Be a leader rather than a follower. Even if you are in an army of one, take charge of your destiny and make decisions for yourself. You will learn faster and be able to guarantee every move made is in your own best interests.
- Take it easy on others who cross you. They are just doing the same as you and trying to stay afloat. I am not saying you should let them walk all over you, just be aware that they have the same pressures (or maybe even more than you do).
- Be kinder to yourself in your self-talk. Be disciplined, be honest but remember that you can either empower yourself or defeat your efforts by the voices and messages in your own head. Reframe negativity and create a world with messages and lessons that make you stronger after every experience.
- See the good in everything. You have a choice. Your mind responds to finding more of what you are interested in. Like Google. If you are constantly finding negativity and examples of a brutal indifferent world, you are only programming your mind to find more examples of it for you. So look for the good out there and that's exactly what it will find for you.
- Look after yourself better. Eat well. Exercise. Take time to relax or meditate. Life goes so quickly that when you are older and feeling the pain, you'll wish you'd avoided crappy foods and walked to work a little bit more often.
- Become an expert in communication. Speaking is free. It's also what separates us from the animal kingdoms. We are able to articulate, encourage, control, chastise, love, hate and motivate with our gestures and language. Learn how to be an expert in these things. They are not just for managers. They are what makes us leaders and winners.
Conclusion.
Next time you watch a nature documentary, see a bird flying past or a cat sitting on a wall remember it is facing similar struggles to you. Similarly, when you watch a celebrity on TV, read about a criminal that's been caught or comment on a social media post, be aware each one of them is doing the best that they can with what they have.
So be nicer to yourself, be tougher on yourself, be happier in yourself and make something special from yourself.
