A Welcome Sustainability Collaborative: Launch of the Cross-Sector Environmental Sustainability Concordat
By James Buckley-Walker, Partner
The launch of the cross-sector Concordat for the Environmental Sustainability of Research and Innovation Practice marks a significant milestone for the science sector. It's not just about meeting a set of standards; it's about embracing an opportunity to revolutionise how we conduct research while minimising our environmental footprint. As advocates for sustainable practices and construction in science, we see this Concordat as a welcome sign of change building in the sector.
For too long, the environmental impact of research and innovation has been overlooked. But now, with the Concordat in place, we have a framework to guide us towards more sustainable research facilities. It's a chance to align our scientific endeavours with our commitment to combating climate change and preserving our planet.
Our excitement stems from the potential of this Concordat to empower the science sector. Collaborating with our industry partners, we can bridge the gap between cutting-edge science and responsible construction practices. This isn't just about meeting regulations; it's about fostering a culture of sustainability that permeates every aspect of research and innovation.
As we launch our Transforming to Zero initiative - developed in partnership with 3XN/GXN , with support from Oxford Properties Group and a wide range of industry collaborators - we're thrilled to see several of our research contributors already onboard with the Concordat. This initiative, born out of two years of intensive research and consultation, aims to lead the way in nudging behaviours to help decarbonise labs across the UK.

But the Concordat represents more than just a commitment to environmental responsibility; it's a declaration of a collective ambition to shape a sustainable future through research and innovation.
We're eager to roll up our sleeves and collaborate with the science sector to translate the Concordat's vision into tangible results. By embedding sustainability throughout the project delivery lifecycle as well as research and innovation ecosystem, we can create research facilities that not only tackle environmental challenges but also serve as beacons of responsible operations and construction practices. Together, we can make sustainable labs a reality and pave the way for a brighter, greener future.
