Spotlight of the month

What’s the difference between Sustainability and ESG?

Sustainability is a concept that refers to the capacity to be resilient in a relatively ongoing way across various domains of life. It is often broken down into three main pillars:

  1. Environmental Sustainability: Focuses on protecting natural resources and ecosystems, reducing pollution, and minimizing waste.
  2. Social Sustainability: Involves maintaining and improving social quality with concepts such as social equity, community development, and human rights.
  3. Economic Sustainability: Aims for economic growth and development that does not come at the expense of environmental and social well-being.

In essence, Sustainability is about creating a balance that ensures long-term health and well-being for the planet and its inhabitants.

ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) is a framework used to evaluate the extent to which a corporation works on behalf of social goals that go beyond the role of a corporation to maximize profits on behalf of its shareholders. ESG criteria are a set of standards for a company’s operations that socially-conscious investors use to screen potential investments.

It includes:

  1. Environmental Criteria: How a company performs as a steward of the natural environment. This includes energy and water use, waste, pollution, natural resource conservation, and protection of biodiversity.
  2. Social Criteria: How a company manages relationships with key stakeholders such as employees, customers, suppliers, and the communities where it operates. This can include working conditions, health and safety, diversity, equity and inclusion, and human rights.
  3. Governance Criteria: The company’s leadership, executive pay, audits, internal controls, and shareholders rights. This includes transparency, conformity and ethical business practices.

While Sustainability is a broader, holistic approach to maintaining the health and viability of ecosystems, economies, and societies, ESG is a specific set of criteria used to measure and evaluate a company's performance and impact in these areas. ESG factors are often used by investors to assess the ethical impact and sustainability practices of a company, helping to guide investment decisions towards more responsible and sustainable business practices.
